At our July 15th changeover social, our new club president Ian Patey officially stepped into his new role. He already outlined an action plan for the year and club members are supportive in achieving the goals he has set. Ian, as well as the club members present, thanked outgoing President Leanne Whelan for filling the President’s position for the last year!
Last night we hosted ten rotarians from Wisconsin USA, who are visiting rotary clubs in our province as part of the Rotary Fellowship Exchange program. After a busy day touring Bell Island, they joined us for supper at Shenanigans Restaurant here in CBS. We learned about our guests and the seven Wisconsin clubs represented. Our incoming President Ian also provided a great summary of our club's work over the years.
The picture doesn't say it all... This past Saturday our club joined forces with Holy Spirit High Environment Club and Interact Club for the 3 Hour Clean up Challenge. In what was truly an amazing group effort, we were joined by MUNHOPE and Villa Nova Junior High volunteers to clean up both school grounds and Route 60. “Collaborate and celebrate!”
On June 3rd we welcomed Colin McNeil, Executive Director at The Gathering Place - a Community Health Centre committed to building community, promoting equality and providing food, clothing, housing and shelter, medical and dental help, and counselling services to vulnerable individuals in our community. Colin provided a helpful overview of the current high demand for the centre and opportunities for service groups, businesses and individuals to contribute.
On Monday May 25th Rotarians Marliese and Lori presented the Rotary-sponsored, CBS Senior Volunteer of the Year Award to Ms. Dallas Tilley. Dallas is a dedicated community volunteer whose energy, positivity, and commitment to service have made a meaningful impact across Conception Bay South. Our club was honoured to be a sponsor of the Town of CBS 2026 Municipal Awards Gala held at the Conception Bay South Arena - celebrating the accomplishments of local volunteers, athletes, artists, and community leaders.
On May 20th our club was pleased to host Khalid Al Hariri from the Association for New Canadians as our guest speaker. He delivered an excellent presentation, explaining not only the challenges new Canadians face in regard to their new workplaces and how to integrate into a different culture, but also what we can do to include them in our communities.
This past Friday May 8th and Saturday May 9th our club sponsored and participated in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program held at Memorial University with 16 students from Holy Spirit High, Gonzaga and Holy Heart of Mary Interact Clubs and foreign exchange students. Their RYLA experience included, team building activities, leadership lessons and group discussions, and a community service clean up project to wrap up the event. The first RYLA since 2015 here in the province and hopefully the start of an annual event.
On Wednesday May 6th we had the pleasure of hosting RNC Sgt. Julie Cunningham as our guest speaker. Sgt. Cunningham provided us with some fascinating insights into policing in our communities.
On Wednesday April 15th Rotary Avalon Northeast and Holy Spirit High Interact Club co-hosted the 4th Annual Job Fair yesterday at Holy Spirit High. Over 630 students from Holy Spirit High and Queen Elizabeth Regional High met with 21 employers to explore students summer employment opportunities. This followed the January Career Fair designed to expose students to over 50 different occupations (traditional and non-traditional) in a variety of employment sectors.
One Week Left! Our 4th Annual Rotary Sponsored Job Fair is happening next Wednesday morning April 15th at Holy Spirit High with students from Queen Elizabeth High also invited. It's not to late for Employers seeking summer students to reserve a free table.
On Wednesday March 18 we welcomed St. John's Northwest Rotarian Jeff Silver to our club to speak about the importance of financial planning. With over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, Jeff is uniquely placed to inform and educate.

On Wednesday April 15th Rotary Avalon Northeast is co-hosting, with the Holy Spirit High Interact Club, the 4th Annual Job Fair at Holy Spirit High where employers will be meeting with students interested in summer employment. Queen Elizabeth Regional High students are invited guests.

On Saturday March 14th we joined with Rotary clubs across the province to Unite For Good. 7815 District Governor Marcel welcomed us in St. John's at our mini-conference where we shared and learned. Many thanks to Rotary St. John's East for their organization and leadership. Our youth were also well represented with Rotaract St. John's and Holy Heart Interact Club.
On Tuesday March 3rd we held our monthly Wellness Clinic - a collaboration of our club, Lions Club and volunteer nurses. This month's special guest, Seniors NL, provided a helpful overview of services they offer for seniors.
On Wednesday February 11th we were happy to help out the Town of CBS, serving up hot drinks at the Winterfest Wellness Walk along Manuel's River!
On Wednesday January 7th our club sponsored and co-hosted, with the Interact Club, the 7th Annual Career Fair at Holy Spirit High. Approximately 700 students met with 85 people from 55 occupations to explore their career and academic paths - more often than not, an interesting and varied journey, not a straight line.
On Wednesday January 7th, the monthly Wellness Clinic - a collaboration of Lions Club, Rotary Avalon Northeast and volunteer nurses - was held with more than 30 seniors in attendance. Besides the regular check up ( blood pressure, weight and sugar levels ) folks were entertained by Scott Parsons (of Rick and the Romans Fame).
Congratulations to Norah Downey, recipient of this year’s Ross Reccord Memorial Scholarship at the Queen Elizabeth Cap and Gown Night on Thursday Dec. 18th. Rotary Avalon Northeast Past-President Ian Patey presented the 50th award - created by the club for a deserving graduate at Holy Spirit High and Queen Elizabeth Regional High in the year 2000 - in honour of educator and club charter Rotarian Ross Reccord.
Congratulations to Sarah Ryan, recipient of this year’s Ross Reccord Memorial Scholarship at the Holy Spirit High Awards Night on Wednesday Dec. 17 at Holy Heart Theatre. President Leanne Whelan presented the 49th award, created by Rotary Avalon Northeast for a deserving graduate at Holy Spirit High and Queen Elizabeth Regional High in the year 2000 - in honour of educator and club charter Rotarian Ross Reccord.
It was a fine morning down at Manuel's River this Wednesday November 19th where our club co-sponsored the Town of CBS's last Wellness Walk of the season. Rotarians Mike, Dave and Rob served up hot soap and sandwiches for over 30 seniors out for a walk along the trail. A big thanks to Taylor Harding and her Town of CBS staff for inviting us!
Members of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast are again supporting the Salvation Army Kettle Drive this year. "Rotary At Work" - volunteer organizations helping each other for the benefit of people in our community!
In recognition of World Interact Week, this past Wednesday November 12th, we welcomed Holy Spirit High Interact President Precious Oyetayo and Vice President Marianne Collins to our club meeting. Precious and Marianne provided a summary of the many activities Interact (junior rotary) Club and the school community have been doing this fall as well as plans for Christmas and the new year. We are constantly impressed by the student commitment to help those in need in our community.

On October 24th rotarians, their family and friends from Avalon Northeast and metro clubs cheered on our Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Team as they beat the Saint John Sea Dogs in QMJHL action at the Mary Brown Centre on World Polio Day. ` $5 from every ticket sold went towards the Polio Plus Fund of the Rotary Foundation helping to eradicate polio once and for all!
On Tuesday October 21st our club partnered with CBS Lions Club and volunteer nurses to hold our first wellness clinic of the new Rotary year in the Lions Clubhouse at 10 Minerals Road in CBS. Approximately 30 seniors were in attendance to have their blood pressure, weight and sugar levels checked by the five nurses. Sandwiches, tea and coffee was provided along some great fellowship.
To top it all off, we were joined by guests - pharmacist Jordan Lambe and pharmacy intern Madison Legge - who delivered a presentation on the importance and safety of vaccines and vaccination, particularly with the coming cold, influenza and Covid season.
Not to be outdone, following the presentation Jordan announced that he will be back on Tuesday November 4th to administer Influenza and Covid vaccines to interested attendees!
On Wednesday October 8th, author and retired educator Pat Collins joined us on Zoom to discuss his literary career - in particular, his love of Harbour Grace history leading to the publishing of 14 literary works including a biography of Harbour Grace Dr. Charles Cron.;The Harbour Grace Affray”; “The Spirit of the S.S. Kyle”; “Murder at Mosquito Cove” and “Belonging.” Pat continues to write and is currently optioning some of his stories for film and television.
On October 17th you can join Pat (The Undertaker Arthur Rogers) as he leads Conception Bay Museum's "Historical Haunted Hike" from the old courthouse at Harbour Grace. (see the link below for more information)
