A happiness hypothesis

Nearly a century of science suggests that when it comes to happiness, one action outweighs all others. Rotary members have a head start.
It was a fine morning down at Manuel's River this Wednesday November 19th where our club co-sponsored the Town of CBS's last Wellness Walk of the season. Rotarians Mike, Dave and Rob served up hot soap and sandwiches for over 30 seniors out for a walk along the trail. A big thanks to Taylor Harding and her Town of CBS staff for inviting us!
Members of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast are again supporting the Salvation Army Kettle Drive this year. "Rotary At Work" - volunteer organizations helping each other for the benefit of people in our community!

In recognition of World Interact Week, this past Wednesday November 12th, we welcomed Holy Spirit High Interact President Precious Oyetayo and Vice President Marianne Collins to our club meeting. Precious and Marianne provided a summary of the many activities Interact (junior rotary) Club and the school community have been doing this fall as well as plans for Christmas and the new year. We are constantly impressed by the student commitment to help those in need in our community.

On October 24th rotarians, their family and friends from Avalon Northeast and metro clubs cheered on our Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Team as they beat the Saint John Sea Dogs in QMJHL action at the Mary Brown Centre on World Polio Day. ` $5 from every ticket sold went towards the Polio Plus Fund of the Rotary Foundation helping to eradicate polio once and for all!


On Tuesday October 21st our club partnered with CBS Lions Club and volunteer nurses to hold our first wellness clinic of the new Rotary year in the Lions Clubhouse at 10 Minerals Road in CBS. Approximately 30 seniors were in attendance to have their blood pressure, weight and sugar levels checked by the five nurses. Sandwiches, tea and coffee was provided along some great fellowship.
To top it all off, we were joined by guests - pharmacist Jordan Lambe and pharmacy intern Madison Legge - who delivered a presentation on the importance and safety of vaccines and vaccination, particularly with the coming cold, influenza and Covid season.
Not to be outdone, following the presentation Jordan announced that he will be back on Tuesday November 4th to administer Influenza and Covid vaccines to interested attendees!
On Wednesday October 8th, author and retired educator Pat Collins joined us on Zoom to discuss his literary career - in particular, his love of Harbour Grace history leading to the publishing of 14 literary works including a biography of Harbour Grace Dr. Charles Cron.;The Harbour Grace Affray”; “The Spirit of the S.S. Kyle”; “Murder at Mosquito Cove” and “Belonging.” Pat continues to write and is currently optioning some of his stories for film and television.
On October 17th you can join Pat (The Undertaker Arthur Rogers) as he leads Conception Bay Museum's "Historical Haunted Hike" from the old courthouse at Harbour Grace. (see the link below for more information)

On Sunday October 5th our club joined with Holy Spirit High (HSH) Interact (junior rotarians) Club and HSH teachers and students in the annual breast cancer research fundraiser "CIBC Run For The Cure" at Bowring Park, St. John's. The HSH Team raised over $6000 - the most of any team. More than $115,000 was raised in the province towards the $18 million, raised nationally.



On Wednesday October 1st Rotarian Rob described what it was like to be a Background Actor here in the province. Rob recounted his interest in film and television that led to pursuing acting following his retirement from the civil service in 2022. The growing film and television industry in Newfoundland and Labrador provides opportunities for people of all ages and life experience to work in a dynamic environment and network with folks from all walks of life.

In recognition of Rotary - Basic Education and Literacy Month, we are pleased to highlight the "Literacy Alive" project - a collaboration between the Rotary clubs of Red Deer, Alberta (Canada) and San Ignacio (Belize). (click on the link below). The goal is to have all Belizean students to be reading competently by age ten.
Locally, the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast annually awards the Ross Reccord Memorial Scholarship to one student from Holy Spirit High School and one student from Queen Elizabeth Regional High School. Rotary's goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

On Wednesday September 17th we welcomed guest speakers Geoff Kearley and Elizabeth Stacey with the Chamberlains Park Action Committee. Geoff provided us with a great overview of the development of this accessible, 16 acre, wetland park including the critical partnership with Rotary Avalon Northeast over the last 20 years along with future opportunities for collaboration.


A New Rotary Year Begins: Welcome from Our President
As we begin the 2025-2026 Rotary year, President Leanne Whelan shares a message of gratitude, optimism, and purpose. With this year’s theme, “Unite for Good,” our club is focused on building connections, strengthening our community, and continuing the meaningful work that defines Rotary.
On Wednesday June 11 we welcomed Vice President of the Holy Spirit High (HSH) Interact Club, Precious Oyetayo, as our guest speaker. Precious provided a thoughtful presentation of her experience at this year’s Adventure in Citizenship Program in Ottawa. Avalon Northeast continues to sponsor HSH students to attend this leadership opportunity and know it will serve Precious well next year as President.

Just the first few minutes of the Tim Hortons 3 hour challenge cleanup this morning around Holy Spirit High and already much success. Thanks to The Interact and Environment Clubs at Holy Spirit High for inviting Rotary to take part!

On Thursday May 15 we joined with Holy Spirit High in 2025 Relay For Life activities to help make a meaningful difference for Canadians affected by cancer. The large Holy Spirit High team had an excellent afternoon of activities and speakers. Total donations exceeded $15,000.00, an amazing effort that will help fund groundbreaking research and vital services that support Canadians currently living with cancer.


On May 6th, we invited CBS Community Garden to provide an overview of the garden initiative (and how to get involved) at our Rotary-Lions monthly Wellness Clinic. Thank you Mary, Joan and Julia for presenting on behalf of the garden.


On Sunday May 5th, Rotary Avalon Northeast was happy to again participate in the annual Heart and Stroke Foundation Bowling Tournament at Paradise Bowling Lanes today....raising needed funds for research, which has led to breakthroughs such as heart transplant surgery and revolutionary stroke treatment.


Last night (April 9th) we were honoured to host the President of Quilts of Valour - Canada, Lisa Compton, and her husband Danny, two Canadian Armed Forces Veterans (Afghanistan), who lead an organization of volunteers that, to date, have made and presented almost 22,000 quilts to ill and injured veterans in recognition for their service and sacrifice to Canada.
The 3rd annual Job Fair at Holy Spirit High (HSH) - co-hosted with the HSH Interact Club was a great success on Wednesday April 9th - the result of collaboration with school, business community and institutions. Nineteen employers met with almost 800 students from HSH and Queen Elizabeth Regional High to explore summer employment opportunities... and at least one job offer was accepted. Special thanks to Rotarians Art and Kevin, HSH Administration (Dave, Denise and Lori-Ann) and Interact President Sarah and VP Precious for co-hosting.



On March 12th, we hosted guest speaker Doug Pawson, Executive Director with End Homelessness St. John's. Doug described how the organization works collaboratively with community and public systems’ stakeholders, leading the coordination and integration of system-wide planning to ensure St. John’s can become the next community in Canada to end homelessness.

On February 12th, we welcomed guest speaker, Lori Letto - Manager of Volunteer Services with Canada Games 2025. Lori provided an overview of the upcoming Canada Summer Games and let us know that volunteers are still required. Thanks Lori for filling us in on what promises to be a busy and rewarding two weeks this August.


The annual Career Fair at Holy Spirit High (HSH) - co-hosted with the HSH Interact Club was a great success on Wednesday January 8th - the result of amazing collaboration with school, business community and institutions - with over 55 occupations represented and some 80 folks participating. Special thanks to Rotarians Mike, Art and Kevin, HSH Principal Dave and Interact President Sarah and VP Precious for all the hosting, set up and catering work.

Club members hosting a Christmas sing-along with Cherry Hill Manor residents and staff this past Wednesday while helping Santa deliver gifts to all.

On December 13th, New Generations Committee, on behalf of our club, was pleased to present food and monetary donations in support of the HSH Interact Club Xmas Food Drive (CBS/Paradise Food Bank). In addition we were happy to support the "Students Helping Students " program at the school by purchasing Hot Chocolate Cones.
Principal Locke and Interact President Sarah Ryan accepted our donations/purchases. Junior Rotarians are our future community leaders!

Rotary was happy to sponsor the Town of CBS Christmas Seniors Social at the Kelligrews Legion this past Thursday December 12th. 220 folks enjoyed live music and lunch served by Town staff and community volunteers, including Miss Newfoundland and Labrador, Megan Coles!



A merry time was had by members and their families at our Christmas dinner this past Wednesday evening. President Ian thanked the Board and members for their support and commitment over this past year and pointed to the exciting year ahead, in service to the community. A big thank you to the Yacht Club staff for a wonderful dinner and to Shawn and Cassandra from Frequency Music for their festive music over the course of the evening.

Congratulations to Leah Casey, this year's Holy Spirit High (HSH) recipient of Rotary Avalon Northeast's Ross Reccord Memorial Scholarship. Leah graduated in June 2024 and is Past President of the Interact Club, demonstrating "Service Above Self" throughout her time at HSH. Rotarian Kevin Ryan and Maxine Pinhorn (Ross's wife) made the presentation at the November 28th HSH Awards night.


On November 27th our club welcomed Kevin Ryan as our newest member. Kevin brings a diverse set of skills from his work as an educator, engineer and entrepreneur. Listening to his daughter, current Holy Spirit High Interact President, speak of her club and collaboration with our club - Kevin thought it was a good fit for him. We look forward to his contributions!


In honour of Rotary's World Interact Week, we welcomed guest speakers to our November 13th club meeting. Holy Spirit High Interact President Sarah Ryan and club member Elizabeth Hollett spoke about their busy schedule of recent and pending club and school activities supported along the way by Rotary Avalon Northeast.
