Fines, Happy Bucks and Confessions:
• The Stewarts have turned in their “ABC’s of Rotary “ book, and the following members who failed to introduce themselves and sign it were fined $2 each: Marie Cramer, Gary Haigh, Deb LeMoyne, Jim Murray, Peter Park, Arnie Pechler, Dave Pray, Nancy Schrader, Eric VanZeilen, Leslie Vecchiotti.
• Eric had a happy buck for a trip to Vermont, where they saw Kari’s recital.
• Leslie had a buck because Carly’s classes at Fredonia were cancelled. Snow day!
• Mark offered thanks to Mother Nature for sparing us the terrible snow that blanketed the Buffalo area in the last couple days.
• Dave’s grandson Dan is one of the Rochester-area EMT’s who went to Buffalo last night to help with the emergency.
• Anne took a trip to Florida – spent time with David’s father. She also went to Boston to celebrate some birthdays and to Burlington to visit her daughter, who has a torn Achilles tendon, surgery for which is scheduled for Monday. Anne is looking forward to this weekend; it is exchange student interviews.
• Steve told us that he got himself all bundled up and took a nice winter bike ride.
• Cindy’s parents are leaving for Arizona for the winter, and the family had a nice gathering to bid them farewell.
• Joan gave a buck for the Steelers, who had a “sloppy” win, but she says a win is a win.
• Dianne was happily looking forward to son Rory’s acting debut this weekend in the middle school play “Willy Wonka”. She also alluded to a slight possibility that one of our past exchange students may be visiting the area next summer.
• Gary offered up a happy buck for the deer he got on Sunday.
Notes and Updates for the Club:
- Formal election of officers for the 2015-2016 will take place at our club meeting Wed, Dec 3. The following positions will be voted on: Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, and Sergeant-at-Arms. Also 3 members will be elected to the Board of Directors for 2-year terms.
- A signup sheet has begun circulating for the club’s Christmas party, which will be Wednesday, December 17 at Parkwood Heights. Social hour starts at 6pm, with dinner to follow at 7pm. Cost is $25 per person. If you missed the signup, it will be passed again at the next meeting, or contact Tom Breen.
- Our club will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign again this year. We have reserved the entryway at Breen’s from Friday 12/5 through Sunday 12/14. Cindy is coordinating signups. We will be covering 11:30-3:30 on the weekends, and 4-7 on weekdays. This is a great opportunity to meet and greet the people in our community and spread the word about Rotary along with holiday cheer.
- The board of directors met last week, and decided to pursue the Park Drive project as our District Simplified Grant (DSG) project. The project will involve installation of benches in the area of the boat launch on Park Drive. The directors also report that a mural project is being considered as a phase 2 for next year’s DSG.
- The board of directors has reviewed and approved a membership application from Chris Santelli, sponsored by Leslie Vecchiotti. Per club by-laws, notice of this approval is to be posted in the club bulletin.
• Past President Pam gave us a quick overview of the district’s recent Foundation Brunch, which she attended. She reminded us that our club participates in the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” program, where we send $5 for each member to the Rotary Foundation. We hold a Dessert Auction each year, with proceeds going to the Foundation, as well as our monthly assembly auctions. The district encourages members to become Sustaining Members, by pledging to give $100 each year to the Rotary Foundation.
• We were visited today by Stacey Wicksaw, who is the Librarian at the Macedon Public Library. We asked her here to tell us about a literacy program developed by a Rotary club in Ohio. The program centers around a children’s book called “Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure”. The book tells the story of a young entrepreneur who starts an apple dumpling business. A mysterious voice guides him, using the Four-Way Test, which enables him to be successful in his venture and make friends in the process.
Our club board of directors is considering ways to use this book in a literacy project within our schools. It could be paired with our “Rotary Reads” initiative, for example. The board is discussing options on how best to implement this project. The book is available in hardcover and paperback formats, and there is a Four-Way Test bookmark tied to the theme.
