Our program/speaker this week was Daphne Pariser, a Pittsford Rotarian and President and Founder of Humans for Education, a nonprofit organization devoted to improving educational opportunities and quality of life for young people in Kenya. She was joined by Past District Governor Gavin Hurley, also of the Pittsford Rotary Club, who has been instrumental in gathering financial support for this endeavor by area service organizations and businesses.

While Humans for Education was founded in 2015, Daphne noted that her passion was ignited when she went on a safari in Kenya when she was 10 years old. She recalled that a young boy about her own age was on the street, begging for money and food, and the incident changed her entire outlook on life. She resolved then that someday she would be able to help alleviate illiteracy and poverty in subsaharan Africa.

Today, her organization provides a variety of innovative programs aimed at eliminating extreme poverty in the region, which she noted is a contributing factor in the lack of schools and education for some 90,000 children in Kenya. These initiatives range from "buying and selling cattle" to raise money for schools, to sanitation programs that teach children such basics as washing hands and brushing teeth.

The latest accomplishment in the area of improving health conditions, Daphne noted, was the opening of a dental clinic, which she attended last month.
