Pal-Mac Rotarians enjoyed listening to our very own Bolivian Exchange Student Ignacio Illanes, better known as Nacho, tell us about his homeland. Host Dad Bob Sloan helped Nacho put together a great power point presentation about Nacho's home town of Taraja Bolivia as well as other parts of his landlocked homeland.
Bolivia was originally a Spanish colony called High Peru. Its name was changed to honor Simon Bolivar who helped lead the charge for freedom for Venezuela, Chili, Bolivia and other South Amerrican countries. Bolivia is a plurinational state due to its many languages, religions and native tribes. Located in central South America Bolivia is surrounded by other countries like Brazil, Paraguay and Peru whose cultures have influenced those of Bolivia. Bolivia is known for its rain forests, salt lakes, mountains and resources like salt and lithium. it also has the largest iron deposit in the world.
Nacho lives in Tarija. He stated that there are no suburbs like here in the US. There are cities and agricultural districts. The most fascinating fact is that there are no house numbers and few street names so therefore no mail service! If you want to send Nacho a birthday card some day it will need to come from a computer. Thanks Nacho for a great presentation. We all learned a lot.
