Pal-Mac Rotary bids a grateful Rest in Peace to Rotarian and Past President Gary Haigh.  Gary was an integral part of Rotary and a pillar of the Pal-Mac communities.  He was known for years as the voice of Canaltown Days and will be sadly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

Chris Edgar from Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County was our presenter today.  Pam Dean and Maurina Schmidt presented Chris a check for $5,200 from the proceeds from the 19th Annual Wayne County Spelling Bee.  Participants included 15 adult Rotary teams and 2 Interact student teams.  The contest lasted a record 18 rounds and judges were close to either running out of words or making some up!
Chris gave thanks to Pam and Maurina and to all the volunteers for their efforts.  He also noted that local company Garlock Inc. made a donation of $500.   Chris went on to describe some of the programs that are available through the Literacy Volunteers organization.  These include tutoring for adults and children as well as book ownership through Little Green Bookshelves and a free bookstore in Lyons.
Adult training includes one to one tutoring in reading, writing and ESL as well as digital literacy working with basic computer skills.  Children’s  programs include volunteers reading to children in school and evening fun literacy nights.   Chris noted that volunteers are always needed.
