Nancy and lap quilt
Maurina introduced Nancy VanApeldoorn, founder of Lap Robes for Veterans.
Nancy introduced herself by showing the back of her shirt with the logo: So Many
Veterans, Sew Little Time. The program has been around for 12 years and the group of 40 volunteers has donated over 9,000 lap robes to veterans. The group goes to the returning Honor Flights and hands out a lap blanket to each veteran participating. Nancy even handed some out to members of Pal-Mac Rotary who had been in the service. The blankets are made of cloth incorporating the different branches of the Armed Forces.
The fabric and sewing store Jackie Lynn’s in Irondequoit donates the space for the construction of the lap blankets and sells the program material at her cost. The volunteers are each given a job depending on ability. Nancy cuts, some sew, some press and some add binding. Any leftover material is made into pillow cases , walker bags or pet bed. Nothing goes to waste.
If you would like to donate to the program you can contact Canandaigua National Bank or visit their website
