Our guest today was Kelly McClure from Heritage Christian Services (HCS).  HCS was formed in the early 1980’s by a group of parents who had children with developmental disabilities.  When HCS was founded, the concept of group homes was relatively new.  In the past, people with developmental disabilities had been placed in mental hospitals and institutions.  The founders of HCS wanted to provide safe, nurturing homes, which would preserve their clients’ dignity.
The organization started with one group home in Webster in 1984.  Since then, it has grown to 70 group homes, with 380 residents and a waiting list of 450.  In addition, they provide therapeutic horse lessons in Webster; operate a retreat and vacation center in Inlet, and a health and wellness center in Henrietta; and operate a farm in Ogden.  The farm is an educational facility open to the public and also serves as a day program site for adults with developmental disabilities.
In addition to these services, HCS also offers day habilitation programs, and respite services for caregivers.  The respite services offer short-term care for children and adults with special needs, providing their caregivers a bit of time to devote areas of their lives.  The organization provides services to over 1600 people in Western New York and the Finger Lakes.  The biggest challenges they face are the long waiting list and upcoming changes to Medicaid.
