This week’s Rotary program was dedicated to healthy eating.  Cailin Kowalewski is a Nutritionist and Consumer Sciences Director for Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension.  She provides classes for the public on things like food preservation and safety and heart disease prevention for women.  Cailin and her team will conduct classes on these and other topics to interested individuals or groups.  Anyone can contact the WCCCE to learn more and schedule classes.
Cailin is also developing a Farm to School Program with the Pal-Mac Middle School.  She is currently working with the student leadership team.  The students involved are learning about healthy food options and will be selecting a meal to serve for lunch on Leadership Day this spring.
Joining Cailin was Maggie McHugh, a Senior Nutritionist involved with the Eat Smart New York program.  Her team works with income eligible individuals in the SNAP program to help them learn to shop and prepare healthy meals using their benefits.  The goals of the group are to increase quality of life by reducing refined sugar consumption and increasing fitness levels .  These are accomplished by direct education in churches, schools and food pantries.
If you are interested in more information you can contact Cailin at the Wayne County Cornell Cooperative Extension in Newark NY or you can check out EatSafelyNewYork at www.FLESNY.org
