December 5, 2012 - Meeting Minutes

Gene Bassage, Vicky Daly, John Denniston, Chase Ellsworth, Cheryl Ford, Gary Haigh, Jeff Johncox, Anne Morrell, Cindy Surline.
Exchange Student Update:
Mila helped pass out the dictionaries and thesauruses at the Intermediate School, which she said was “pretty cool.” She was happy about the exchange student Christmas party she attended. She showed off the t-shirt she received at the party. She said she is used to people having trouble spelling her last name, but on the t-shirt they misspelled her first name!
Singing:
With the Christmas season upon us, and in honor Pearl Harbor Day, we sang Silent Night.
Birthdays, Anniversaries:
None this week.
Fines, Happy Bucks, Confessions:
- Arnie and Joy got to see a Nebraska Cornhuskers football game – in Nebraska – and it was quite an event. Also, his granddaughter had a “fill the bus” food drive which was quite a success.
- Margaret tells us the UNC Women’s Soccer team made it to the final four, and won the trophy.
- Bill had a happy buck for Syracuse basketball, still undefeated.
- Eric sat in the rain and watched the Bills beat the Jaguars.
- Bob Yost had a happy buck because he took a ride on his motorcycle – on the 4th of December!
- Bob Sloan offered “a happy 8-point buck” and another for Mila, who joined him and Dianne for Rotary Reads. The kids loved her, and hated to see them leave.
- Peter had offsetting bucks: happy for his youngest brother’s wedding, sad for the abuse his body took thanks to the good food and lack of sleep.
- Joan was happy to announce the Steelers’ win over Baltimore, and that they did it with their 3rd string quarterback.
- Pam got to spend time with her 2-year-old granddaughter over Thanksgiving.
Notes and Updates for the Club:
• Gene and Shirley arrived safely in Florida and are settling in.
• Bell ringing at Breen’s for the Salvation Army begins Friday, December 7th. As of this meeting, there were a couple of shifts that needed to be filled. Two of our visiting students volunteered to help.
• Just a reminder that www.palmacrotary.org is now active and points users to our ClubRunner site. Please use it in any future publications or correspondence.
• Gary Haigh is stepping back from his role as coordinator of the Dictionary Project. He has been the person who contacted the school to determine the number of students to receive books. He then ordered the books, held a “sticker party” to get our labels in them, and made arrangements with the school for delivery. If that sounds like a fun project to you, please contact Dianne, as the position will be available.
• Speaking of fun projects, we will also have an opening for Programs Coordinator. Debbie LeMoyne has done a fantastic job lining up speakers for the past several years, but has decided to step down. Recently, we have gone back to assigning members to specific dates, asking them to coordinate with Debbie. If riding herd on the members sounds appealing to you, contact Dianne to volunteer.
• At our December 12 meeting, the proposed candidates for the 2013-2014 board of directors will be presented for approval by the club.
• Our annual Foundation Dessert Auction will be Wednesday, January 16 at Parkwood Heights, in the evening. There will be no regular noon meeting that day.
• The 3rd annual Murder Mystery dinner is Saturday, February 2. There will be no club meeting the following week.
Pat VerPlank won $12 in this week’s 50/50 and donated it to Polio Plus.
