Mark introduced Jeremy Bricks to discuss the new computer program being installed in all buses in the Pal-Mac district.  Jeremy has been the school district’s Transportation Supervisor since 2010 and is also a certified bus driver, trainer, 19A examiner and Vice-Chair for the NYSED Transportation Committee.
Jeremy showed a video made by him and second grade students from the district.  It showed the new program on all 50 buses that help keep our students safely in the right place.  Drivers have tablets in the buses that show the names of the students and their bus stop on each day.  If the child has a varying routine of stops, the tablet will show that to the driver.  Starting with Primary and Intermediate students, each child will have an ID card that will be scanned entering and leaving the bus.  If a child is accidentally left on the bus, an alarm will sound notifying the driver that the card was not scanned.
Only Pal-Mac and Saratoga Springs districts are using this type of technology.  The overall goal of the program is to increase student safety, knowing where they are at all times.  The screen is only lit when the bus is stopped so it will not be a distraction to the driver.  It also has a photo of every student so even a substitute driver will know if the right child is entering or exiting the bus.  If a child should forget their ID tag the driver can manually sign them in.
As with any new program there will be some bugs that need to be worked out, thus the start with the Primary and Intermediate schools only.  Middle School and High School students will be included at a later date and hopefully the program can be modified for sport activities as well.
