Bill Dean introduced this week's speaker, Adam Olschewske, owner of Marshall Exteriors in Newark and an eight-year member of the Newark Rotary Club.  Adam laughed as he said he named the company for his wife's maiden name, “because my name didn't fit on the side of the truck!”
Adam and his wife, Colleen, are parents of two children, daughter, Mirra, “who just turned 12” and son, Zane, who is four. The family resides in Newark, which is also home to his company, which employs some fifty people from the area.  Founded by Adam in 2000, Marshall Exteriors is “a full service exterior remodeling company”, which offers everything from a new installation, restoration and maintenance to custom siding and replacement windows for residents of Newark, Geneva, Canandaigua and surrounding areas.
But, Adam did not come here to talk about his business, he stated.  Instead, he shared details of a personal tragedy which shattered his life and, ultimately, transformed his perception of the things that are really important in life.

He enjoyed “family life as usual”, he said, with a nice home and a thriving business to support a beautiful family and comfortable life style. That all changed on New Year's Eve 2014, when his wife was in the hospital awaiting the birth of their third child, a son who would be named Paxton Olschewske. He received a call from the doctors who informed him the baby “had no heartbeat” and would be stillborn. Not only did he lose his son that evening, but came close to losing his wife, as her life was threatened by complications of the procedure and took three months to recover.
As a result, Adam said he “gave up on hope in humanity” and adopted a very negative view of life. Over time, bolstered by the “kindness and generosity” of doctors, nurses and staff; family and friends; and even strangers, Adam said he realized that “Somebody Cares” and resolved to do something to begin to care for others.
That search led him to “No Roof Left Behind,” a nationwide organization of contractors that offers folks in their communities an opportunity to help their neighbors who have fallen on hard times. The program lets individuals nominate a needy family in their community to be considered for a free roof installation by a participating contractor. Now in his second year of participating in this program, Adam is the coordinator for Ontario, Wayne and Seneca counties.
Nominations for this year will be accepted until May 31st, Adam said. The process is simple: just go online or contact Adam at Marshall Exteriors with the nominees' information, “a few sentences on why they should be picked,” and at least one good photo of the house and existing roof. Nominations will be reviewed during June and July and the winner for this area will be revealed on July 31.
