Host families needed for inbound exchange student this fall

After a one-year hiatus, the Sycamore Rotary Club will again be playing host to an inbound Youth Exchange student this fall...and host families will be needed.

Sycamore Rotarians are being asked to help recruit at least three families to host our student; the gender and home country of the student have yet to be determined.  Hosts need not be Rotarians.

If you or someone you know may be interested in serving as a host family, please contact Chip Houdek or Jeff Keicher for further information.

Guest Speaker: Hao Feng

Hao Feng (right, next to Ying-Li Chen) appeared on behalf of the Shen Yun dance troupe, a Chinese dance performance group now on tour around the United States and worldwide.

He noted the history of Chinese theater and dance, contrasting it with Western-style ballet; while ballet puts emphasis on dynamic moves, the Chinese style emphasizes form and technique, combining with traditional philosophies and the country's cultural history to tell complex stories through dance.

The performance features elements of Chinese culture dating back 5,000 years or more, bridging the gap between then and now...right down to including traditional instruments alongside a modern orchestra.

Shen Yun will be at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in Rockford on Friday, March 11th and Saturday, March 12th; they will also be at the Peoria Civic Center Theater on Wednesday, April 20th.

Hula for Loota set for Thursday, April 21st

The Sycamore Rotary Club's annual Hula-for-Loota fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, April 21st; it will be from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at Chapel in the Pines in Sycamore.

This annual Hawaiian-themed event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club's scholarship fund; the featured event is a draw-down raffle, with numbers being removed one-by-one...and the last one drawn, wins the grand prize of $3,000.

There will also be cash and prizes given away throughout the drawing, as well as a 50/50 drawing; tickets for the main drawing are available from Paul Michel.

Pictures still needed for Rotary website directory

Pictures of individual members are still needed for the Rotary directory on our website; dozens were taken at the last meeting, but we'll be taking images of those members absent from that meeting during the coming weeks.

If you have an image you'd like to submit, please send it to Brian Adams at brianadams62@hotmail.com (head shot of the Rotarian only, and no gag shots will be accepted).
