It's not surprising that Rotary and the Peace Corps have come together to work on international projects...because the two organizations have similar aims.
Jessica Vig appeared before the Sycamore Rotary Club on June 17th, discussing her time abroad with the Peace Corps; she spent her time working with persons in remote areas of South Africa. She says the sub-Saharan portion of Africa gets the most focus from the Peace Corps, while the organization does have volunteers in countries around the world.
Vig says like Rotary, the Corps is interested in health and education in underdeveloped portions of the world; part of her time in Africa dealt with construction and maintenance of latrines, instruction in handwashing and safe food preparation, and locating safe water sources.
Peace Corps and Rotary projects overlap in over 60 countries around the world; in 2014, the two organizations a letter of collaboration for projects in the Philippines, Togo and Thailand. Peace Corps volunteers have been known to join Rotary, once their overseas service comes to an end.
Due to heavy rains and flooding which hit the Sycamore area, this year's Rotary Club Golf Outing has been postponed.
Rotarian Dan Gibble, chairman of the Golf Outing committee and Executive Director of the Sycamore Park District, says the rainfall which hit the area on June 15th left standing water on several portions of the course; he says it will now be impossible to play on Wednesday, June 24th as scheduled.
This postponement means the following changes to our Rotary Club calendar:
-- The Make-up Session scheduled for Wednesday, June 24th has been moved to Blumen Gardens; it will begin at the usual 11:45 a.m. starting time. Attendance is optional, and there will be no formal business conducted.
-- The Installation of Officers and the presentation of the John W. Ovitz, Jr. Rotarian of the Year Award will now be held during the regularly-scheduled Rotary Club meeting on Wednesday, July 1st. This will be held in conjunction with the Club Assembly already scheduled for that day.
-- A determination will be made later, on when or whether to reschedule the Golf Outing and the post-golf dinner.
This marks the second straight year that weather has impacted the Golf Outing; thunderstorms on the day of the event last year forced its cancellation.
The Sycamore Rotary Club has approved the application of Darion Page as our latest member; he is the Business Development Manager at DeKalb Sycamore Chevrolet Cadillac GMC. (In keeping with our bylaws, his approval for membership is on display for 30 days before becoming official.) We welcome him to the Rotary Club, and look forward to working with him.
Meanwhile, due to a change in her court schedule, Robbin Stuckert has left the Rotary Club; we wish her the best of luck in the future.
Rotary Districts 6420, 6440 and 6450 are banding together for a night at the old ball game on Tuesday, August 4th, as the White Sox host Tampa Bay at U.S. Cellular Field.
The evening will be used to highlight Rotary's End Polio Now campaign; 100% of the proceeds from the tickets will go towards the EPN fund. Over 10,000 Rotarians have attended this annual game in the past, and with enough on hand there will be an opportunity for an on-field parade.
Tickets are available at the District 6450 website, at www.Rotary6450.org; register by July 24th to guarantee your seat.
