 The Sycamore Rotary Club was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Robert I. Smith on Tuesday, October 13th; he died in hospice care after a brief illness.
R.I. Smith was one of the longest-serving members of the Sycamore Rotary Club, and a pillar of the community in a number of areas; he was a Past District Governor for Rotary District 6420, and participated in a number of local and regional Rotary efforts until the very end.
The Sycamore Rotary Club extends its condolences to the family of R.I. Smith. The family is asking for any photographs of Bob in action with Rotary; anyone with photos should send them to Barry Schrader, who will relay them to the family.

Every day, the Hon. Robbin Stuckert faces a bond call in her courtroom and has just a few minutes to decide whether a defendant is eligible for bond, and what it should be set at. She says judges often have little to go on when making these decisions...but DeKalb County is taking steps to help out, and bond reform across the country could assist further.
Stuckert is a former member of the Sycamore Rotary Club, and in December will begin service as chief judge for the 23rd Circuit. She told Rotarians that personnel from Court Services now take time to test and interview each defendant, and assess how much of a risk they pose; this, along with mandated procedures that all judges follow, help her to decide how to fairly set bond...balancing the defendant's rights with the safety of the community.
She notes that an individual's economic situation can vary; persons with means can usually afford 10% of a $100,000 bond, while poorer suspects may stay in custody because they can't come up with $500 on a $5,000 bond. And those who stay in custody suffer loss of employment, housing and family, with devastating effects on their loved ones -- and that's while the presumption of innocence is in effect. And she says that studies have demonstrated that there's no correlation between how much a defendant can pay to meet bond, and the likelihood that they'll show up in court.
Judge Stuckert also discussed plans for the county's drug rehabilitation home for men; right now, the county has had to hire an architect to determine whether the house is ADA compliant...and will examine that architect's report, to determine what changes if any will be needed before the house can be put to use.

The Make A Difference DKC MobilePack event to support Feed My Starving Children will be held Nov 12 – 15th at The Suter Company facility at 1015 Bethany Rd in Sycamore, next to the Farm Bureau building. Sycamore Rotarians will once again join forces with other area Rotarians to volunteer together on Saturday, Nov 14th at 9:00am.
Heidi Wright will be passing a sign-up sheet around over the next few weeks at our Rotary meeting, and is encouraging you to bring your family members to join us. 4,700 local volunteers will be needed over the course of the four-day event; volunteer spots are already 92% sold out, but Rotary’s block of 50 spots is already reserved.

The goal for this year’s event is to pack one million meals. Each meal costs $.22, which means it takes $220,000 to pay for the food that will be packed over the four days. Sycamore Rotary’s goal is to contribute at least $6,000 to the event through the sales of raffle tickets.
If our Rotarians sell 500 tickets, we will have self-funded our contribution and raised $4,000 for our own club’s projects. Selling 7 tickets provides enough revenue to feed a child for an entire year. Contact Heidi Wright to get your 7 tickets and you will feed a child for a year and help our club reach our fund raising goals.

Dear District 6420 Rotary Clubs and Rotary Club members:
Last month’s 8.3 magnitude earthquake impacted the lives of tens of thousands of Chileans, including the lives of Combarbalá, Chile residents. District 6420 sent a Vocational Training Team there for two weeks this past June. The earthquake damaged schools, residences and businesses (including the hotel where the team stayed) and caused considerable emotional stress due to the 200-plus aftershocks which kept so many people on guard.
District 6420 has invested much time, treasure and talent in the Combarbalá community thanks to the work of the Vocational Training Team and financial contributions from the Rotary Club of Galena, a Rotary International Global Grant and District Designated Funds. This enabled strong bonds to develop, grow and evolve. Bonds that are well worth building upon.

District 6420 has asked Combarbalá Rotarians how the District might marshal resources to be of help as the community recovers from the earthquake. Combarbalá Rotarians appreciated our offer and suggested that the most meaningful help is continuing the work which the Vocational Training Team started. This help involves bringing Combarbalá teachers of English to District 6420 in order to enhance their English teaching skills by observing classrooms within the district and speaking with native English speakers.
The District has set a goal of raising $15,000 by Nov. 15, 2015, enough money to bring at least 10 teachers to District 6420 for three weeks in January/February 2016, summer vacation for Chilean teachers. These funds will be used to purchase round-trip airfare plus provide a small stipend to purchase English-language classroom materials. The teachers will stay in private homes in the District.
Your support of this project, through cash donations or airline miles, will impact lives–Chilean teachers, their students and the community and give hope to a community that needs hope. The Rotary Club of Galena, through its 501(c)3 charitable foundation will coordinate the project with the help of the Vocational Training Team.
