Schedule shaping up for Meals on Wheels; volunteers still needed

The schedule is falling into place for this year's Meals on Wheels project; Rotarians will again be giving their time during the month of August, to deliver meals to elderly persons and shut-ins around Sycamore.

All dates are claimed, but some only have one person signed up; we normally assign two Rotarians to each shift, to ensure that at least one will be available that day. Please contact Brian Adams at brianadams62@hotmail.com to sign up for an open slot, or if you have any other questions.

Guest Speaker: Mark Bushnell

Sycamore's City Engineer has worked for a number of cities during the course of his career, as an employee or consultant...and he says the staff in Sycamore is the best he's ever had the opportunity to work with.

Mark Bushnell outlined the duties of his job, and noted that while he's seen city workers elsewhere go through the motions, his personnel in Sycamore are always ready to jump in when needed -- sometimes volunteering when a task needs doing. This has enabled him to accomplish more on behalf of the city, including road maintenance and water system upgrades which need to be done during the summer construction season.

Bushnell says his office coordinates with the City Manager on engineering, zoning, water department and other infrastructure-related matters. He says the city is responsible for nearly 90 miles of roadway, over 100 miles of water and sewer lines, and an underground system with over 4400 manhole inlets.

He says the city has been able to take care of a number of road maintenance issues during this summer, and deal with one or two emergency repairs. He also says there is much to be done, especially with the property on and around the DeKalb County Jail expansion job site.

School supplies donated at annual concert

The Sycamore Rotary Club once again collected school supplies from its members, for donation to needy students in DeKalb County by way of the DeKalb County Health Department.

Rotarians were asked to bring supplies to the July 13th meeting; backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, scissors, folders, construction paper, glue and other items are being donated.

These supplies were delivered to the annual School Supply Drive concert, held at The House Cafe in DeKalb on Sunday, July 17th. Our thanks to Paul Callighan and Barry Schrader, for delivering items to the concert that day.
