The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association is dedicated to preserving the county's place in the evolution of modern agriculture...with one speaker saying that our county is the Silicon Valley of ag development in the United States.

DAAHA Board Member John Diedrich (right, with Norm Larson and Donna Langford) noted the many contributions made to agriculture during the 19th Century. While the creation of barbed wire is what put DeKalb on the map, less well-known is the invention and manufacture of the Marsh harvester; this device was used to cut grasses, wheat and other crops and move them onto a platform for bundling.

The Marsh harvester was originally developed in Plano in the late 1850's; the Marsh brothers then relocated to Sycamore...where it was made at what is now Blumen Gardens, in the very room where our Rotary Club meets.

Diedrich says the need to move this and other product out of Sycamore spurred the development of the railroad, and was a factor in the growth of cross-country rail service...and by extension, the country as a whole.

Pat Shafer nominated for Rotary Board of Directors

Pat Shafer was nominated for a seat on the Sycamore Rotary Club's Board of Directors at its August 10th meeting; he would be taking over for Jude Wilbers, who resigned when he and his family decided to move to Batavia.

In keeping with the Club's bylaws, his name will stand in nomination for 30 days; after that time, the membership will be asked to vote on whether to allow him to serve on the Board.

Pat would retain a place on the board for five years, and he would serve as Club President for the years 2019-2020.

District 6420 urges early Rotary Foundation donations

2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation. Our district is having a RF donor dinner in Deer Valley on November 5th and DG Scott Shore has requested all clubs make a special donation to the Foundation at that time.

At the Sycamore Rotary Club board meeting in August it was suggested that Rotarians be asked to consider making their annual donation to the RF before October 1 (if you are planning to give this fiscal year - July 1-June 30). The only alternative was to have a separate fund raising effort for this challenge, which would be difficult on such short notice.

Giving the annual contribution now to the RF would preserve the tax deductibility of your donation.

If you feel you can give your annual contribution before October 1, please make your check out to the Rotary Foundation and give it to Michele Jurkovic, with a note to add your amount to the club contribution.

100% Attendance Lunch scheduled for August 24th

The Sycamore Rotary Club will recognize all members with perfect attendance during the 2015-16 Rotary year, at the annual 100% Attendance Lunch to be held on Wednesday, August 24th.

All members with outstanding makeups should turn them in to Sally Bruch, in order to qualify for the lunch; contact her for further details.
