Incoming President Jonelle Bailey and outgoing President Steve Wilder share stories at Wednesday’s annual Golf Outing and Dinner at the Sycamore Golf Course. Jonelle thanked Steve for his thoughtful leadership during the past year. Conflicts involving other officers prompted the decision to delay new officer installations until next week’s meeting.
Rotary members and friends fielded five foursomes for golf and were generally able to play through without too much trouble from the weather. The Matt Nelson team came in with low score while the Steve Kuhn team had the high score (Steve is pictured here with his team’s winning prizes of water bottles).
Mary and Pat Shafer joined Paulette Renault and Pat Marsden for the evening dinner. Shafer (Club Secretary) and Renault (Sergeant at Arms) were given verbal thanks by Jonelle as she commented on their service to the club.
Dr. Michele Jurkovic and State’s Attorney Riley Oncken exchange golf stories during dinner. Dr. Michele got an appreciative call-out in Jonelle’s remarks for her dedicated work as Club Treasurer.
Diane and Bob Hammon were on hand to support event participants.
Also supporting the event were Jim and Marcia Stoddard.
Service Above Self was the theme of discussion at the table with Bob Brown, Dave Hamilton, Steve Kuhn, and Jim Buck.

June 19, 1902 – Baseball’s “Iron Horse”, Lou Gehrig, is born in New York City. He played in 2,130 consecutive games and seven World Series for the Yankees only to die at age 37 from the degenerative muscle disease that bears his name.
June 20, 1924 – American military hero Audie Murphy is born in Kingston, Texas. He was the most decorated American soldier of World War II, awarded 37 medals including the Medal of honor. After the war he became an actor making 45 films.
June 21, 1982 – Britain’s Prince William is born in London to Princess Diana and Prince Charles, becoming second in line for the British throne.
June 18, 1815 – On the fields of Waterloo in central Belgium, 72,000 French troops led by Napoleon suffer a crushing military defeat from a combined army of 113,000 British, Dutch, Belgian, and Prussian troops.
June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth Day) – In Galveston, Texas, General Gordan Granger enters the city officially placing Texas under Union control to close out the Civil War. He publicly reads General Order #3 transmitting the news of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freeing 256,000 enslaved Texans (two years after the proclamation was originally issued). The date becomes a Federal Holiday in 2021.
June 19, 1829 – British Home Secretary Robert Peel introduces the Metropolitan Police Act into Parliament to establish a unified police force for London. The result is the city’s first modern police force whose officers are appropriately nicknamed “Bobbies” after their founder.
June 20, 1975 – The movie “Jaws” , based on the book by Peter Benchley, directed by Steven Spielberg, a score by John Williams, and starring Roy Scheider is released. It won Academy Awards for Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound; it established the practice of summer blockbuster releases by major studios (becoming the first film to earn $100 million in U.S. theatrical rentals) and is ranked number two on the American Film Institute’s scariest movie list behind “Psycho.”
