We were visited by Sarah Wolf & Ann Marie Walker from the Discovery Center. The Discovery Center was started in 1981 in the old Post Office Building on South Main and moved to their current location in 1991 when Sears donated the property. Among other things, they have a river front museum park, planetarium, discovery park and Ag-zibit, which was added in 2010. They feature many travelling exhibits and events every year that encourage children to explore the concepts of math & science. Their outreach program served over 38,000 in Rockford, Loves Park & Machesney Park area schools, day cares & libraries. They also offer after school programs, classes & camps. They receive help from many volunteers and funding comes from a variety of sources, such as admissions, memberships, grants & contributions. They host special events every year such as the one in August featuring performer Jim Gill, originally from Rockford.
