Rotary Club of Houghton
The Rotary Club of Houghton was chartered on November 1st, 1920. We are an international membership organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world.
How We Serve
The Rotary Club of Houghton is comprised of People of Action who subscribe to the concept of Service Above Self. We create lasting change in the Keweenaw in these ways:
- Mentor Youth - by sharing time, experience, and expertise through mentorship opportunities in these Rotary related programs: Interact (High School Club), RYLA (leadership program), and RYE (short term and yearlong youth exchange)
- Get Involved – we positively impact our community through local scholarship awards and service projects like: Copper Dog, Big Brother Big Sisters Bowling, Highway Cleanup, Choices, 3rd Grade Dictionaries, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, and more!
- Fundraise – to support club initiative; our past fundraisers have included a Bridgefest event and raffles.
- Support Global Causes – we contribute to and collaborate with the Rotary Foundation and other Rotary clubs on international service projects
- Houghton Rotarians establish fellowship and have fun while serving others
Avenues of Service
We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.
- Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
- Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society.
- Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.
- International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
- Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.
Member Expectations
Houghton Rotary is looking for active members who will support our club, get involved, and help move us forward. If you are accepted into membership of the Houghton Rotary Club, take pride in your involvement for we consider it to be a great honor to be known as a Rotarian. We are People of Action!
Member Activities
There are many different ways to be involved in Rotary, locally and internationally. Here is the foundation of an active Rotarian:
- Members are expected to participate in local and/or international activities and service projects. There are many club service projects to be active with: local scholarship awards, Copper Dog, Big Brother, Big Sister Bowling, Highway cleanup, Middle School Choices, 3rd grade dictionaries, Salvation Army bell ringing, and more!
- Members are involved in our annual fundraisers, whenever possible. Our fundraisers vary and usually include a spring or summer event and Vacation Raffle; proceeds support local and international projects and organizations.
- All members join a committee organized by each Avenue of Service and participate in the committee planning and execution.
- Members are encouraged to aspire to leadership roles within the Club, District and Rotary International.
- Create Fellowship - Attend the weekly lunches and other club fellowship events as much as possible.
Weekly Lunch
We meet nearly every Thursday at noon
- The weekly meetings are used to exchange relevant information and include a brief program
- You are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings with other Rotary clubs
- Houghton Rotary has reciprocity for lunch costs with the Hancock-Monday Noon and Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw-Wednesday Noon, be prepared to pay for your lunch if you attend any other club meeting
Membership Dues and Fees
Members are billed quarterly to cover the cost of lunch and District and International Dues. The weekly lunch amount is billed regardless of whether the member actually attends or not.
