Join us Thursday, May 27, at noon for our midday Rotary meeting where our presentation will be given by members of the Youth Commission. The Youth Commission promotes inter-generational civic engagement and leadership opportunities for high school age youth in Olmsted County. The commission has been supported by the Rochester City Council and the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners for more than 25 years.
Speaking at our club's Thursday meeting will be Salma Abdi, a junior at Century High School and Sarah Strauss, a senior at John Marshall.
Salma has been extremely active in human rights, sustainability, and mental health issues and has been appointed a Youth Commission Co-Chair beginning in the fall. She is also a member of the Minnesota Youth Council, a group established by the Minnesota legislature, to ensure that youth voices are heard at the Capitol. She attended the National League of Cities conference in Washington DC to represent the young people in Rochester. And in March of this year, she was featured in “25 Under 25: Women of Color to Watch” in Ms. Magazine.
Sarah is headed off to college this fall after two active years on the Youth Commission working on mental health and human rights issues. Most recently she chaired the Voter Empowerment Committee last fall and worked to distribute voter registration information at all three high schools. She worked with other community groups such as the NAACP to make information available in other locations to people of all ages.
The Rotary Club of Rochester Foundation will be changing its name to The Rotary Club of Rochester Community Foundation. This name change is taking place to emphasize that the official goal of the foundation is to improve the quality of life in the Rochester area by supporting projects that focus on promoting health, education and self-development of people in the community.
With that in mind, the foundation board is creating a new community grant. Keeping with the original intention of the foundation, this grant will only be available to fund projects in the Rochester area. The grant will be awarded annually and provide up to $5,000 in funding. Applicants must be a member in good standing of the Rotary Club of Rochester. Members may apply for the grant on behalf of an organization or project, whether they are directly involved or just believe in the work being done. The grant will be awarded by a committee made up of foundation board members.
The Greater Mankato Rotary Club is proud to request the honor of your presence at the installment of one of our members, Kenny Klooster, (bio) as 5960 District Governor for 2021-2022.
The installment reception is planned for June 25, 2021, at The Blue Boat in Mankato. The event will run from 6 pm to 9 pm. Our club will provide appetizers and live music! A cash bar and dinner menu will also be available for purchase. We are excited to honor Kenny, showcase our wonderful city, and share information about Rotary projects from around the world and locally at the event. Edgar Botello-Hernandez, a medical student from Mexico, has been accepted as a research trainee at Mayo Clinic. He is looking for accommodations while in Rochester and has reached out to Risers President Don Supalla for assistance.
