Members of The Rotary Club of Rochester have an opportunity to attend a Rotation Day meeting at the Rochester Public Schools' Alternative Learning Center on Thursday, February 29. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. (earlier than our regular mid-week meetings), and conclude at 1:00 p.m. You'll hear about the classes, programs, and opportunities offered. In addition, we will learn about the Rotary Strive program at the school from the Strive counselor, a mentee and mentors with the Strive program. This is an in-person meeting only. If you'd like to eat, plan to bring your own lunch. Please register if you plan to attend.

Starting in 2017, Rochester Rotary clubs developed an Ethics Day event for 20-30 students from Rochester high schools. The highly rated program was offered through 2021. As Rotarians began to re-activate Ethics Day in 2023, District Governor Patricia McCleese met Patricia Shafer, executive director of NewGen Peacebuilders, at the Rotary International Convention. Ms. Shafer is a Rotary Peace Fellow who started NewGen Peacebuilders because she believes that youth have the passion and the potential to solve big problems. NewGen Peacebuilders has worked with Rotarians throughout the world to bring peacebuilding knowledge and tools to more than 10,000 young people. Rochester Rotarians began to work with NewGen Peacebuilders and Rochester Public Schools to develop the first Rotary Ethics & Peacebuilding project in Minnesota.
Interactive, hands-on experiences on Feb. 12
Patricia Shafer will lead the kick-off event on Feb. 12 for 50 students at John Marshall High School. “Students leave the day with a new set of frameworks and experiences that help broaden their thinking about the connections between peacebuilding and ethical decisions, as well as an appreciation of Rotary as an organization that promotes positive civic engagement,” says Ms. Shafer.
The Jeremiah Program is grateful to have members of The Rotary Club of Rochester help bring families from poverty to prosperity two generations at a time. Cook 4 Kids is an integral part of Jeremiah families’ week – a chance for them to enjoy a meal they don’t have to prepare, witness the generosity of others firsthand, build relationships and comradery with other families, and gain more from the fifth pillar of the Jeremiah program – “Supportive Community.” Our club's next Cook 4 Kids meal is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 from 4:15-6:30 p.m. Members of TRCR's Mentorship Program will be volunteering along with TRCR members.

Rotary has been making peace visible for 119 years. February includes the anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary held February 23, 1905, in Chicago. The day is now designated as the World Understanding and Peace Day.

Stewart is a graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
