2012 Student Recipients:

Heidi Mendez - 2012 Recipient
My name is Heidi Mendez and I am a recipient of a Hopkins Rotary scholarship. I attended Minnetonka High school and I live in Chanhassen. I am so excited to be attending the University of Minnesota this fall!  I will be living in the WISE (Women in Science & Engineering) Living and Learning Community in Frontier Hall. I am very excited to get involved with the campus community by going to football games, joining clubs, and participating in intramural sports. I cannot wait to make new friends and become completely independent.  I am taking five classes next fall including physics, Spanish, and multivariable calculus. Even though college will be a huge adjustment, I am ready to be challenged, grow, and discover who I am.
Besides preparing for college, I have been playing fastpitch softball competitively this summer. I am on the Minnesota Sting Elite and we won the 18U Minnesota State Tournament this summer. We also qualified for ASA Nationals in Johnson City, Tennessee. We had a lot of fun and beat teams from all over the country. I also enjoyed going to Minnetonka Community Theatre's production of "All Shook Up" this summer. Both of my sisters, Maureen and Emmy, participated in the production- Emmy as a featured dancer and Maureen as Natalie. I have also been avidly reading books this summer. I have just finished reading my tenth book for fun.

Ed Mitchell - 2012 Recipient - Summer Update
Thank you for awarding me the scholarship.  It is very much appreciated and will help out a lot.  I had many things going on this summer.  I have been many different jobs.  I have a small shop in my garage and I repair bikes, basic lawn mower and small engine repair, and basic auto repair. I traveled to the U.P. of Michigan for the 4th of July.  I worked up there for a while mainly hanging drywall.  I took a trip up to Ontario Canada to Lake of the Woods to take a fishing trip with my grandpa, dad, cousin, brother and uncle.  It was a great trip even though it was a bad fishing season.  We fished for walleye in the morning and northern after lunch.  Every day we fried 16 fish in 3 pounds of lard. Probably wasn’t the healthiest but it tasted good.  I also went to Many Point Scout Camp as an assistant scoutmaster to help out the boys.  I have an open house for Northcentral Tech on the 8th of August and am registered for classes.  I will be taking general courses this year and auto classes next year.
 Thanks
Ed Mitchell
