Tribute of Flags – Honoring the Lives Lost on 9/11

Each September, members of the Rotary Club of Omaha come together for one of our most moving and meaningful annual service projects, the Tribute of Flags at Memorial Park.

For over two decades, Rotarians have placed nearly 3,000 American flags across the park, each one representing a life lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. This powerful visual display serves as both a solemn remembrance and a symbol of unity, resilience, and hope.

Rotarians, families, community members, and local youth groups join forces to ensure every flag is respectfully placed, transforming the park into a sea of red, white, and blue. As visitors walk among the flags, they are reminded not only of the profound loss our nation experienced, but also of the enduring spirit that unites us.

The Tribute of Flags is more than a Rotary project. It is our gift to the community, a moment to reflect, to honor, and to educate future generations about the importance of service, sacrifice, and solidarity.

Rotarian Dan Esch is Project Chair for nearly two decades.
