Marine Corps Monument
Our speaker this week was Robert “Bronk” Brunkalla who spoke with us about about the work of the Omaha detachment of the Marine Corps League including the establishment, construction, and proposed improvement of a Marine Corps Monument at Heartland of America Park.
The Marine Corps League is the only Congressionally chartered organization for Marine Corps Veterans. The League does tremendous work in caring for and remembering Marine Corps veterans and their families, and providing opportunities for fellowship and camaraderie for veterans.
We also learned about the Omaha Detachment’s work at Miguel Keith Park, located near the Kroc Center in South Omaha. The park honors Miguel Hernandez Keith, an 18 year-old Marine Lance Corporal from Omaha who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Keith is one of only three Omahans to have earned this, the nation’s highest military honor.
Thanks, Bronk, for an engaging and enlightening presentation. Thanks also to Rotarian, Pete Sakaris, for arranging this program and introducing our guest speaker.
Good News:
What an opportunity we have this coming Saturday, 7:00 PM at the Ralston Arena, to see one of our own, Rotarian Nash Mahupete, in Dancing with the Stars, a benefit for the Teammates mentoring program. Tickets available at this link:
http://www.ralstonarena.com/events/detail/dwtos2018 Rotarian and past Club Secretary, Lindsey Rai Reasner, had some terrific news for us: She’s getting married to Rotarian, J. J. Kortan, who she met through their shared membership in our Club and participation on the MACS Committee. Congratulations Lindsey Rai and J. J.!
Thanks to all of our guests and visiting Rotarians, most especially to Jill Floth, President of the Assistance League of Omaha, guest of Rotarian, Tracey Madden-McMahon. The Assistance League and their program Operation School Bell were the recipients of a grant last summer from our own Omaha Downtown Rotary Club Foundation.
Next week:
Next week, in honor of Lincoln’s Birthday, we will have Dr. Fred Nielsen, adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha, with a presentation about our 16th President. And its Valentine’s Day, so bring your sweetheart as a guest for this special program. What could be more romantic?
Remember, if it’s Wednesday, the place to be is Downtown Rotary.
See you next week!
