“Service Above Self” is the motto of Rotary. Perhaps no one represents that sentiment better than the citizen soldiers who serve in Nebraska’s National Guard. From serving in combat to defend our state and our nation, to responding effectively and efficiently in natural disasters, both at home and in other states, the Guard provides service in many capacities. Our thanks to Brigadier General Kevin Lyons for providing us with a great presentation about the Guard at our Club meeting on Wednesday.
General Lyons gave us an overview of the activites of the Nebraska National Guard, and their domestic and overseas deployments. He told us about how the Guard has been called to respond to the recent hurricanes in Texas and Louisiana. And General Lyons told us about educational opportunities available to Guard soldiers and how the Guard can help soldiers to complete college or trade school.
Good News:
Alan Smith, who is doing great service for the Club this year by leading our Programs Committee, announced that due to the recent merger of Level 3 into Century Link, Alan received a promotion to District Director for the company.
John Mock’s good news was that Rotarian Taylor Wineland of Travel & Transport had recently graduated from a leadership program that John had established at that company. Congratulations Taylor!
John Ewing announced that he had traveled all the way to the island of Jamaica, along with his wife, Rotarian Viv Ewing, in order to get some high level training for our upcoming Cornhole for a Cause Tournament on October 13, for the benefit of Girls Inc., at Big Red Restaurant & Sports Bar, 8100 Cass St., 5:30 to 9:00. Come out and play to win or just come to witness the mad bag skills John acquired on his trip. Either way, you can have some fun and make a donation to benefit Girls Inc.
And Jim Murphy announced that he was making a donation in honor and recognition of women in Rotary. Thanks Jim and thanks to all of our women members.
Next week:
Dr. Jorge Zuniga from the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Department of Biomechanics will talk about 3D Printed Prostheses and Anatomical Models for Children.
If it’s Wednesday, be sure to be at Rotary.
See you next week!

You can see the check presentation in the photo and how excited Apollo, the service dog, was to be awarded the grant.
