President's Pen

In February 2021, Downtown Rotary will join West and Suburban Rotaries for the Kids Against Hunger Project. Please let Lindy Hoyer know if you are interested in serving on this service team.

As I mentioned in my comments on June 24th, my role is to get out of the way of the next generation of leadership for our club. I am happy to report that numerous leaders have taken up the Rotary banner and are running toward the future.  I firmly believe that Rotary is part of the solution to our many challenges, and I believe our new international leader says it well on page one of this month’s “Rotary” magazine.

“This does not seem like a great time for optimism, but it has to be. Long before Rotary was founded, the world dealt with great crises that tested humankind’s ability to progress and endure. In the age of Rotary, the world has faced many more catastrophes, however, we have survived, and every step of the way, Rotary has helped the world heal…
Every great challenge is an opportunity for renewal and growth…
Rotary is not just a club that you join: it is an invitation to endless opportunities. We believe in creating opportunities for others and for ourselves. We believe that our acts of service, large and small, generate opportunities for people who need our help, and that Rotary opens opportunities for us to live a richer, more meaningful life, with friends around the world, based on our core values.
All of this is positive news, but just because there are greater opportunities than ever for Rotary to thrive does not guarantee that we will succeed. The world is changing rapidly…Now is the time to put everything on the table, test new approaches, and prepare Rotary for the future…
…The world needs Rotary now more than ever.”
-Holger Knaack, President, Rotary International

More than one hundred Rotarians have already renewed their membership in The Rotary Club of Omaha (Downtown) in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic. This is a great sign that our best days are still in front of us. I am very pleased that you, too, have signed on for the journey. It is sure to be beneficial for all concerned.

Good News 6.10.2020
From Exchange Student, Loan Jobert
I made it home safely. Sorry I didn’t send you a message earlier it’s because I have enjoyed my time with my family. I had a wonderful year and I’ll miss a lot my host family and my friends. I wish I had more times over there. Thank you so much to my host club 5650 for giving me this opportunity to live this experience. Thanks for everything you’ve done for me. I hope we’ll have the chance to see each other again!

From Chris Tointon
Rotarians Chris Tointon and Cheryl Logan team up for a great cause! The YMCA in partnership with Omaha Public Schools will be distributing fresh fruit and vegetables to families in need at four school locations per day starting today (Wednesday, June 9) through the month of June. Each family will receive a 23-27 pound box filled with apples, oranges, strawberries, peaches, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis – enough to last a week.  We are anticipating that we will distribute over 120,000 pounds of fresh food in June alone.
