President's Pen
During a business presentation this week, a colleague pointed out that, in nature, networks form the basis for resilience. In Nebraska, we’re eyewitnesses each March to this phenomenon as one of the “greatest wildlife spectacles on the continent” (according to the Audubon Society) funnels through the Platte River valley. Have you been to a blind at the Rowe Sanctuary or another observation point? When you see sandhill cranes in flight to the fields, landing in formation or at roost in the river, you are witnessing a resilient network of behavior developed over thousands of years.

Rotary, too, is a vast and resilient network. Strengthened by this thought and your personal commitment, your board and our committee chairs are preparing The Rotary Club of Omaha to thrive long into the future.

Thank you for your continuing membership. If you would like to take another step in your Rotary journey, here are three things that you can do:

  1. Volunteer. Our motto is Service Above Self. Contact one of our committee chairs listed below.
  2. Attend our zoom meetings. We’re planning something special each week.
  3. Bring a guest. Our club is building the most diverse and inclusive membership in Omaha. Who do you know that should be part of our resilient network?

As schools prepare to open and state and local office holders issue health guidelines, your board is monitoring the scene closely. We are already planning and will discuss a hybrid meeting option (both digital and in person) at our August 14, 2020 board meeting. President Elect Aileen Warren is leading this effort with support from Sean Olson and our Digital Experience team.

See you on July 29th!

STANDING CORE COMMITTEES

Weekly Meeting Recap
We had the pleasure of welcoming Patrick Donohue, CEO of Hill Capital Corporation, an investment firm dedicated to filling the funding gap for entrepreneurs in the Midwest. Patrick currently lives in Eden Prarie, MN but has a number of connections to our Rotary club since he is a proud graduate of Creighton University ('99) and a member of Eden Prarie's morning Rotary Club.

The topic for Patrick's presentation was Thriving in Chaos. In the midst of the economy coming to a standstill because of the pandemic, Patrick wanted to highlight the ways that small businesses and entrepreneurs were innovating and thriving, both on the national and local levels. Some companies have shirted their businesses to fight the crisis, like distilleries making hand sanitizer. Others have focused on the crisis and leaned into a changing business landscape. Still, other businesses have focused on audiences, serving the needs of a community suddenly stuck at home. Patrick highlighted in particular how community banks have been integral parts of making sure that small business thrive during this time.

Regardless of the approach that business are taking in response to the pandemic, a common theme Patrick mentioned is that the businesses that were thriving were the ones who inverted the problem and focused on controlling what they could control. Those small businesses were less "fragile" and able to handle the bumps in the road as they came along.

We thank Patrick for his time, his dedication to helping small businesses thrive in the Midwest, and his stories of hope and inspiration during a tumultuous time.

Have an excellent day!

Good News July 22
From Sean Olson:
My son Zach was selected to play in the Metro High School Basketball All-Star Game this past weekend. Showing a picture of him and some of his former AAU teammates and friends.

From Adam Leong:
I competed in the Omaha Triathlon on Sunday. It was my first open water triathlon so I was a bit nervous until I heard the race announcer's voice. It was none other than fellow Rotarian and fellow WashU alum Hal Daub! Thanks to Hal for his enthusiasm in announcing, and for getting up so early. Go Bears!
