President's Pen

Greetings Everyone,

Dr Cheryl Logan played double duty this week being introduced as our newest member of Downtown Rotary (welcome) and also being our featured speaker. She gave us some great insights into some of the challenges and amazing opportunities in our Omaha public Schools. She challenged all of us that we are the role models for literacy in our world and without the chance of literacy the opportunities and future prospects for our youth are very challenging. Dr Logan talked about the main areas of focus as she has worked into the position of superintendent and the real challenges of Strategic Foresight. Not just strategic planning but actually looking ahead to the needs our kids will face into the future and how to better prepare them to engage and give back. The problems are challenging but she sees a bright future and also pointed out that it takes engagement of parents and the community for a great education system. Thank you Dr. Logan for your dedication to our youth.

Great work bringing guests to the meeting this week, especially during our "Free Lunch" promotion. We want you to participate! Bring a potential new member to the next meeting and their lunch is FREE and you will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift card. Congrats to Kathy Estes for winning the drawing this week.

Heather gave us an update on our Rotary International giving and our challenge to have 100% of our club members donate to RI by year end. Thank you to over 2/3 of the members that have helped so far. Please consider a gift to RI in any amount along with your giving to our club service fund to help support Rotary.

Rotary Christmas Social

Join us for a Rotary Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 6 starting at 5pm. Kathleen Estes will host a pot luck dinner at her Old Market loft at 1105 Harney, above Jams Restaurant. Her home is an eclectic mix of historic Old Market and mid-century décor. It overlooks the riverfront and the ConAgra campus, allowing for beautiful wintertime views. After dinner we will enjoy a holiday lights tour on Ollie the Trolley. The Trolley only holds 32 people, so early registration is encouraged. Dinner is pot luck and BYOB. You may bring refreshments on the trolley if you like.

This event is being sponsored by Jena Bailey and Dino’s Storage.

Parking: There is street/metered parking, the parking garage on Harney (entrance next to Roha) and the lot on the S/E Corner. Kathy’s front door is on Harney between Old Chicago and Jams. 5^th Floor, Apt. 503 (there is an elevator). Find ESTES on the directory and she will buzz us in.

Gretchen Bren Flag Exchange

Gretchen Bren reported on her trip to Pakistan:

"I was able to do a flag exchange with the Rotary Club of Lahore (Pakistan), including our friend from the GSE exchange, Col. Baseer Shaikh.

They have an amazing club-- they own their own building which includes a clinic and a post office (and also sublets space to a bank). I was able to even do some polio drops at the clinic."
