BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

Emily Nance, Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters presented the program.  Emily has been in the nonprofit field for 29 years, the last 9 have been with BBBS.  The program has been in existence since 1961 in Amarillo and their mission is to provide adult mentors for children who are in single parent or foster homes. Specifically their goal is to make life better for these children, to encourage them to have higher expectations and to reach their potential in school and in life.  Most of the children have no family member who has ever attended college and a large percentage come from homes with single moms so the need for male mentors is imperative.

Our own Martin Birkenfeld is involved with "Bigs in Blue" which is a program that matches police officers with children.  This gives them an excellent role model as well as dispelling the idea that policemen are to be afraid of or wary of.  Another program is "Sports Buddy" which is collaboration between the WTAMU baseball team and children from the 79107-10 areas of Amarillo and Canyon.

All it takes is 2 hours per month to make a difference in the life of a child.  To be a "Big" one must be at least 18 years old, no criminal record, clean background check and willing to make a 12 month commitment.  Training is provided and BBBS then assigns children to mentors who have similar interests in order to make a good and productive match.  The ages of children range from 6-14 years to enter the program, however a child can stay in the program until 18 years of age.

Fundraiser Announcement:  Raffle tickets were distributed for the Fair Over/Under Shotgun valued at $2,000.00 or a gift card valued at $1,000.00. APD INTERIM CHIEF UPDATE

The program this week was presented by the Amarillo Police Department Interim Chief Ed Drain.  Ed is on loan to Amarillo from the city of Plano, Texas.  After serving  in Iraq, in 2007 Ed retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.  He is currently a Rotarian in the Plano club and most recently held the position of community service chairman.  Other community volunteerism includes serving on CASA and Salvation Army boards of directors.

Ed showed great confidence and enthusiasm in the quality of the Amarillo Police Department.  Recently the KRW Consulting Firm was hired to review the department and formulate a report.  Four focus areas were established:

(1). Community Policing promotes interaction between the department and citizens to gain trust and develop relationships.  Numerous requests for the return of bicycle patrol will soon be implemented.  More "boots on the ground" in areas of higher crime rates will include North Heights, Barrio, Southlawn and San Jacinto neighborhoods. Special PACE unit officers will focus on identifying and monitoring repeat offenders.
(2). The Domestic Violence Unit will be expanded.  Out of the 8 homicides last year, 7 involved people who were in relationships.
(3). Property and Evidence facility is moving to a larger warehouse for increased security and efficiency.
(4). The current radio equipment used by the department is over 20 years old, an improved system will be purchased.

Chief Drain spoke briefly about the Citizen's Police Academy.  September is the time to sign up for that outstanding program where citizens are allowed to take a hands on approach to learning how the department functions.  Sign up is available online.

Daniel Martinez proposes another new member; Jerry Morales.  Jerry is a General Law Attorney.  Please advise Gina if you have questions about new member proposals.

Martin Birkenfeld gave the Holdup Report.  A couple from Midland, Michigan were hosted by David Elizalde.  Watch for the news story each week in the Amarillo Globe News.

A long time faithful Rotarian, Ed Harrell passed away this week.  His service is Friday 2:00 First Presbyterian Church.

President David reminded us to take lots of pictures at Rotary meetings, events, or whenever we get together.  Send those pictures via email to Cal Harriman who will post them on our Facebook page.  Thank you for the reminder David, we have much to share.
