“WARKC” We Are Rotary Kampala Central. Building strong foundations to serve our communities sustainably
In the Month of October Rotary Club of Kampala Central looked back at our first 100 days and indeed we are “WARCK” We Are Rotary Kampala Central.
We gave ourselves a challenge to get 100 images and see if we could at least get 50% of club members appearing in one photograph or other undertaking club activities we actually got to 80% which is 54/80 members. Now we want this to be our number for service project participation by June 2025 and be maintained into the future.
INCREASING OUR IMPACT
Our TRF target of $50,000 is so close seeing as we are at $35,900 largely thanks to our member Hon. Thomas Tayebwa. Members now have an audacious task to bridge the gap. On EREY we shall be a 100% giving club by January 2025. What we are not doing well as a Club on is Polio Plus our target is $2000 and we are only at $175.
Our TRF utilization has seen a very aggressive push to execute 2 Maternity Child Health Global Grants (GG) and where we are the host clubs. GG2240454 is an MCH in 7 Districts at 75 Health centres where we have distributed an array of items that include, resuscitation bags, digital thermometers, penguin sucker, baby cot, KMC bed, syringe pump, infant incubator, handheld oximeters, oxygen splinder 3 way, infusion pump, vein finder portable, filing cabinet, phototherapy machine, VayuCPAP, oxygen concentrator, infant warmer and baby weighing scale.
GG2343311 is an MCH at Kyengera Womens Hospital where we have supplied equipment for an operating theatre that includes theatre bed ,operating light ( ceiling mounted) Anaesthesia machine ( with monitor, vaporizer), Oxygen concentrator, drip stand, suction machine, intubation set-Laryngoscopes, vital signs monitor- ( BP, Pulse, oxygen, ECG,RR), Diathermy, theatre Linen, Theatre Instruments and theatre instrument trolley among others.
We are a partner on a project with e global and I hope more members will participate in the monitoring activities for this GG. The club is actively supporting for a Rotary Program of Scale in the area of Maternal and Child health by providing information and mobilizing more clubs. We as a club have already committed 30$ per member to be paid as part of our dues for 3 years from 2025/25.
EXPANDING OUR REACH
Two new members joined us and were inducted during the DG visit in August 2024. They are most welcome. We still have a long way to go as out target is 10 more members. If we don’t lose anyone we shall probably end up at 88 members.
On Youth engagement the team led by the
agile and versatile Rtn John Tumusiime have excelled. Our target was to strengthen and support our 3 Rotaract clubs by learning with them, having joint activities and they have supported us especially on our tree planting programs. We have sponsored 20 Rotaractors for RYLA and 8 to attend RAS. On top of all this we have 2 interact clubs in the pipeline. Acorn and Nyenga Seminary where we are planting trees.
Now when it comes to promoting Rotary, our Monthly Passion Magazine was given a new set of wheels, a new coat of paint and a brand New Engine. We have consistently come out on time, we have innovated and introduced a greatly enhanced flip version which has increased readership beyond Rotary.
ENHANCING PARTICIPANT ENGAGEMENTS
The club at the club retreat reflected on how best to enhance member participation not just at fellowship but also during service projects. It was agreed that the club was to follow the Rotary monthly themes and these were set in our calendar also available on club runner. Getting interesting engaging speakers that attract not just Rotarians but also guests was another area we identified. We have quite a few of these lined up. Member participation at service projects is not there yet but we have increased from around 10 to 30 members of the 50 we had set as a target. Fellow ship attendance is much better from around 30% to 50% by June we shall be at 50% and we shall support the next team to maintain and grow.
Family of Rotary has not slept on the job. Daily Anniversary and birthday wishes have been what we look forward to as the first message and these have been 100% supper efficient and on time. FoR also has organized 2 Club Outings so far one to ENN owned by Past LG David Nsubuga and the other was to Tales In Bukoto.
INCREASING OUR ABILITY TO ADAPT
RC Kampala Central was one of the first clubs to meet all the Governance requirements and qualify for Grant Applications. The club has key documents in place that include MEMARTS (Memorandum and Articles of Association), Club Bylaws, a 5 Year Strategic plan and Finance Manual. We were able to update the
Finance Manual and the key focus was to separate the Audit and Finance Committees to meet proper Governance requirements in line with best International Practice. A number of draft documents are under review and some soon to be approved such as the Membership Rules, Risk Policy, Data Policy, Mentorship Guide and the Procurement Manual. With support from the District 9213 Ethics and Governance Committee clubs will soon be getting further guidance templates to help them and we look forward to their dissemination.
Harnessing Technology through Innovative ways of working is something the club is undoubtedly leading with. We have optimized the utilization of Club Runner not just as our website for updating photographs of our projects and uploading our Passion Magazine but also dialed up by using it to record attendance of members, makeups, guests. In addition, we are now issuing invoices, issuing individual statements, sending emails. The club also utilizes its WhatsApp forums to drive encouragement by reducing fatigue through community groups within the WhatsApp group, pinning important information like the 100th Discon and other registrations, undertaking polls to accelerate member engagement and alignment.
