Membership – Chair: Marc Perry followed by Suzanne Sylvia

Reporting on the Associate Member Pilot Program, Marc Perry noted that we have already gained three members in this program:  Nicole Ouelette, Liz McMullan, and Jennifer Litteral.

The board approved the purchase “Rotarian At Work” T-shirts for the entire Club in an effort to encourage more engagement in club activities among current members as well as a nice “welcome to the Club” gift for new members coming into the Club.

Community Service – Chair: Art Blank

Charlie Porter, who works with Nancy Corliss at Lynam Agency, attended RYLA.

The club utilized its Cancer Support Fund to assist the hospital’s Island Infusion Center in the following ways:

  • A new infusion chair with pillows to replace an obsolete unit which is no longer comfortable for people who need to be immobile for several hours ($1,700
  • Two (2) electronic tablets to be used by their patients ($400)
  • 200 ($20) gas cards to be provided when deemed needed for patients traveling distances which create a hardship.  Noting, some patients require multiple (sometimes daily) treatment for which travel costs are an unusual burden ($4,000)

In a Joint project of Rotary and the YWCA, Benni McMullen collected toys, books and warm clothing for a YW-operated day care center in New York City that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy. They accumulated two carloads of items.

New Associate Member Jen Litteral served as club liaison with the Interact Club at MDI High School.

Healthy Kids Day. Sue Kropff is helped organize a program that was a lot of fun. The club provided bike helmets and Dean Read and others fitted the helmets on kids who attended

International Service – Chair: Kim Harty

Mike Bonsey gave a talk on his Guatemala visit at the July 18 club meeting.

Safe Passage.  The club’s committed to sponsoring a Safe Passage child for a year.  Kim shared aoletter from our sponsored child at Safe Passage in Guatemala, Allan.  He wrote: Thank you for the letter. I liked it very much and I hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year…I am studying very hard to pass my grade so I can move on “Basico”, because I want to be a professional (we are guessing soccer player). My favorite soccer team is Real Madrid.

Le Grand Village, Quebec.  For the past 5 years, members of the Bar Harbor (MDI) Rotary Club have donned workclothes to join local Rotarians in a “close–to–home” international project. In 1965, the Quebec Rotary Club saw a need and founded a camp for people with disabilities. Today Le Grand Village, scenically located on the St. Lawrence River, is more than a camp; it provides extraordinary experiences to those who really need and deserve it.  This year Mike, Diane, and ten year old Eva Bonsey, Dick and Barbara Fox and Scott Hammond represented the MDI club and worked in the rain to prepare the camp for the coming season. There are many mundane jobs that need to be done, but even washing 200 chairs becomes fun while making new friends with the French speaking Rotarians working alongside you.   Part of the work project was clearing space and building a new addition for “La Petite Ferme.”  The small lean-to will thrill campers, aged 3-85, with the opportunity to see, walk, and pet sheep and pigs while spending a day in nearby tents. Three newly built dorms —each outfitted for different stages of disabilities, and recreation areas specifically designed for comfort and accessibility, can accommodate up to 72 people at a time. Campers enjoy inspiration, respect and a multitude of life experiences.

GSE visit.  During May, MDI Rotarians had another opportunity to interact with international visitors; this time from Norway. A Group Study Exchange made up of young, non-Rotarian business people and professionals who are in the early stages of their careers experienced life on MDI.  Lisa Horsch-Clark took them hiking; they shared a potluck supper at Scott Hammond’s home and a night out with Nicole Ouellette.  As part of the vocational exchange, Rotarians pursuing careers in journalism, library science, and education spent time sharing and comparing their vocations with employers at The Islander, Jesup Library, and YMCA Chickadee's Preschool.  Outplaying twenty local teams at the MDI Rotary’s Adventure Golf fundraiser provided a highlight they will not soon forget. Nearly $4,000 was raised and the proceeds will go to MDI Hospital Oncology Department and Sarah's House, which provides lodging for Eastern Maine Medical patients and their families.

Nancy Corliss collected and sent a box of stuffed animals off to her friend in Nicaragua.

Rotary Foundation – Chair: Burt Ritchie

Burt Richie reported on the success of the Foundation committee’s efforts to get 100% participation in Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY).

Public Relations – Chair: Nicole Ouellette

Nicole Ouellette completed a sponsorship packet for the Seafood Festival.

Fellowship – Chair:

The holiday party was held on Wednesday, December 5. A cash-bar cocktail hour was held from 5 to 6 PM.

Dave Woodside hosted lunch at Jordan Pond House again this year, which featured some great lobster stew and popovers. Despite the fact that, due to road closures because of budget issues it was even more inconvenient getting to the restaurant, we had a full house for our annual lobster stew and popovers. It is a great treat every year that the members and their guests really enjoy. And to top it off, the sun came out this year!

Fundraising – Chair: Lisa Horsch-Clark

November’s fines were dedicated to Safe Family Passage, an organization created by Club members Jane Adams & Bernie Staples which trains volunteers and assists children of divorced parents with a supervised exchange of their child when required.

One month’s fines went to the Washington Hancock Winterization Program.

We continue to collect fines for Sarah’s House, the Cancer Hospitality House at EMMC. We had a number of large extra donations at a regular weekly meeting went to this project.  Fines for a month were dedicated to this project, and we hope to get more involved later.

We heard a very inspiring story at one of our weekly meetings. Lindsay Turner, the sister of Sarah Robinson, talked about her sister’s desire to help others even as she was suffering herself. The result is that the Cancer Hospitality House of Maine at Eastern Maine Medical Center will be called Sarah’s House when it is opened. Nancy Corliss met Lindsay at a hunter’s breakfast in Old Town this fall, heard her story and asked her to speak to our club.

Sarah Robinson was the youngest member of the Old Town Rotary Club when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2010 at the age of 24. While receiving radiation treatment at CancerCare of Maine in Brewer, she met many patients who had to travel great distances on a daily basis for long periods of time to receive their treatments. Compelled by the need she witnessed and the contrast in comfort she had experienced on her trips to Boston, Sarah worked diligently to establish a cancer hospitality house for those traveling from distant Maine cities and towns for treatment in Brewer. Knowing her own time might be short, she looked to her Rotary Club for help. Sarah died in 2011 but her vision and dream live on. The Old Town Rotary Club has pledged to raise $400,000 toward the project goal of $2,500,000. In order to open as soon as possible, the center will be housed on the 4th floor of the Riverside Inn at Eastern Maine Medical Center. After the presentation, Annette Higgins offered to work with ADG Lincoln Ehrlenbach (who was at our meeting with his wife Debbie) and the Ellsworth Club to see if we might be able to help raise funds together to help renovate one of the rooms as a “Hancock County” room. As an initial donation, the board authorized the fines for December and January to be designated for this project. If you would like additional information please go to their website:  http://www.sarahshouseofmaine.org.

Fine money for April was designated to help provide a scholarship for a youth at YMCA summer camp.

June fines went to the Bar Harbor Food Pantry in recognition of our month to work at the food pantry.

Adventure Golf.  The annual tournament to raise funds for cancer-related causes was held on May 18. Club members working on the event are Annette, Brad Bicknell and Lisa Horsch Clark.  We had great weather (which as you know is unusual or the golf tournament).  The golf tournament was a big success, we raised over $4000 for cancer (Sarah's house and local projects).

I’d like to recognize Rotarians we’ve lost this year, John Harding and Judge Bernie Staples.

I think we’ve had a successful year all around.  We’ve helped A LOT of people and organizations and feel we’ve represented Rotary very well.  I’d like to recap our year and remind everyone of all the things we’ve seen and heard and recognize some special things that happened along the way this year.

First of all, I’d like to thank our Board Members for assisting me this year.

At the MDI HS Awards Night we awarded 2 $1,000 scholarships to Aedan Higgins and Nellie LaValle.

We also awarded our Golden Apple Award. Liz Graves was instrumental in handling this award process for us this year, and was there and presented our recipient, Carolyn Todd, with the plaque.

Judith Swazey was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for her work with the Food Pantry and the library.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND DONATIONS:
Sent 2 members to RYLA – Liz & Derrick
Sent 5 members to RLI – Steve Redgate, Ron III, Corey, Susy, Audree
We had 4 members representing us at PETS
We had 7 people go to Le Grand Village in Quebec this year and help out, which was another successful project. Despite the interrogation at the border.
We had over 8 people participate in the FOA Earth Day Roadside Cleanup
We sent a Shelterbox to the Phillipines ($1,000)
We supported the District Governor’s Nicaragua project ($1,000)
We sent a donation to the Lac Magantic Relief effort ($500)
We supported the Farmington Rotary Club’s trip to Guatemala for the Quintecerra program ($500)
We sponsored a child at Safe Passage ($600)
We made a donation back to Bike Maine ($750)
We donated to Town of Bar Harbor Park/Rec Bike Rack Project ($500)
We support Acadian Little League with a sign ($200)

Our Happy/Sad/Fine dollars went to many places this year:
Boy Scouts, Hospice of Hancock County, Sarah’s House, Hancock County Habitat for Humanity, Safe Family Exchange, Food 4 All, Downeast Horizons, Heating Fuel assistance through Maine Seacoast Mission, Park Street Playground

We had 8 members attend the District Conference. Awarded Recognition for our increase in Membership & our contributions to The Foundation
Awarded the Governor’s Citation – Level II
Awarded Presidential Citation (with Distinction)

Events –
July 4th Seafood Festival – Would like to thank everyone who helps with this event.  We couldn’t pull it off without everyone’s contribution.  I like to recognize a special person who really got us out of a jam.  We had a miscommunication with the propane, and this person stepped up and went WAY above and beyond to fix the situation. Dick Fox found just how many propane tanks his big truck will hold.

Bike Maine – Our club earned over $8,200 which helped with the shortfall of the seafood festival.  I know A LOT of people helped pull this together, but I’d like a special round of applause for Dean Read & Robert Rechholtz and I know Liz McMullen helped with getting the volunteers.

Fill A Boat – Nancy Corliss, maybe my favorite Rotarian?  This is the one event I regret missing the most this year.  But what an event?  Nancy demonstrated just how significant “the power of one” can be.  Nancy almost single handedly organized a boat ride “Fill a Boat – Stand up to Cancer” through Atlantic Oceanside and raised over $4,000 in a single evening.  That’s just inspirational.  I’d like to take a second to talk about Nancy, if I could. Nancy’s had a busy Rotary year.  She stepped up and took over Admin Committee, re-did the Strategic Plan, she’s also serves on the membership committee, she does her part on July 4th, she offered a Lobster Boat Ride and Island Picnic at the Holiday Auction, she participated in a walk for Domestic Violence, she sponsored a new member, Jim Mroch, and I think she even hired John Willett as an insurance agent which is leading John back to joining the Club, AND she helped Annette organize tonight’s dinner.  Whew! AND I’m sure I’m leaving out some stuff.

Polio Plus Quilt – Most of you probably didn’t get to see the quilt that Bennie McMullen made, but it was an amazing quilt made with Rotary T-shirts and logos and things with Polio Plus in the middle.  Annette Higgins went above and beyond with selling tickets and getting clubs in the entire district to sell tickets at PETS and the District Conference.  In the end, that little project raised over $1,400 for Polio Plus.  We raffled it off at the end of the District Conference and last year’s District Governor, Serge Poulin, won it.  He actually bought the last tickets to get the grand total over $1,400 and then won it.  It was a special moment.

Holiday Party & Auction – This year we went back to our roots and brought back the Holiday Auction which we did at our Christmas Party which we held at Pat’s Pizza this year.  We raised $1,500 that night, which we donated ($750 each) to both the Bar Harbor Food Pantry AND the West Side (Quietside) Food Pantry.

Adventure Golf Fundraiser -- This year we held it in a monsoon, but managed to get through it and raised more money this year than ever ($4,650).  Our very own Ron Wrobel Classic was individual low score this year.  I’d like to thank everyone who participated, who donated and who organized this event.  I’d like to especially thank newer member Steve Boucher and his better half Jenna for stepping this year and taking over the event. Thank you so much for that.

Lastly,
I’d like to thank everyone for making this a great year, and a memorable year for me as your Club President.  I thank you for the assistance and opportunity to attend the International Convention in Australia.  It was an amazing and overwhelming experience.  I hope to share photos and stories from that trip with the entire club very soon.  It’s been my pleasure to lead you through this past year.

NEW this year
(2014-2015) is the formation of a Past Presidents Committee which will be a sub-committee under the Admin Committee that will be comprised of Club Past Presidents with varying
responsibilities

Membership – Chair: Suzanne Sylvia
Our club has seen a fair amount of growth over the past few years in thanks to being a part of the Associate Membership Pilot program. Our goal this year is to continue sustainable growth with new members, as well as to encourage current Associate Members as to the reasons they may want to upgrade their membership to Active Membership. Our goal is to still get new applicants out and approved by our Board of Directors and membership in a timely manner and to encourage participation by new members in our new member orientations and our membership passport program.

Community Service – Chair: Art Blank.
The Service Committee will be in a year of transition this year, as we shift responsibility for overseeing the granting of awards to a committee of Past Presidents. We have overseen the Golden Apple Award (educator of the year), our Rotary scholarships and the nomination annually of a non-Rotarian Paul Harris Fellowship. We will continue to oversee the annual mini-golf tournament to benefit patients and families dealing with cancer, the backpack program providing stocked backpacks to children experiencing emergency removal from their homes, and the annual collaboration with our YMCA promoting safety during their Kids Day celebration. The major project we have struggled with, which we expect will enjoy new, refreshed, leadership is the effort to restore the Park St. Playground. We will also be planning this Fall to
rebuild some of the items that are the infrastructure used during our annual Lobster Festival.
We will also be supporting the Food Pantry organizing volunteers for one month during the year to staff the Pantry.

International Service – Chair: Suzy Davis
The club submitted a district grant application. This grant request is to support a project in collaboration with the Ellsworth Rotary club and also the Vancouver club in Canada, to distribute wheelchairs in Panama to those in needs of this significant item. We have made the connection to Panama through Susy. She visited Panama last January and made a connection with the Santiago Rotary Club. Santiago is a city 4 hours away from Panama City, and they are very excited to do this project with our clubs. The purchase of the wheelchairs will be soon and we are thrilled to make this effort together as Rotarians, since our club has not applied for a grant in several years.

Rotary Foundation – Chair: Corey Vanskike
The Bar Harbor (MDI Rotary) Club has a well established and strong foundation contribution culture. The club actively participates in the Every Rotarian Every Year program and encourages its members to make a donation to the foundation. While we do not stipulate an explicit dollar expectation, our board has established a matching program to incentivize this giving by promising to match up to $50 per member for every dollar donated by members. Furthermore, when we successfully reach our EREY goal the club provides a free lunch to our members to recognize our accomplishment. This year we plan to provide an overview of the foundation and its accomplishments during this lunch to
reinforce our culture. In order to facilitate member contributions, we provide an opt-in option for club members to contribute to the foundation and pay member dues together at the beginning of the 2014/2015 Rotary fiscal year. Any members that choose not to contribute within the first few months are contacted personally by members of the foundation committee to discuss contributing to the foundation on a individual basis. For the first time in many years, our club has successfully applied for and has been granted a district grant for an international service in Panama in cooperation with the Ellsworth Rotary Club. I am confident that this project will provide a tangible example of the foundation's value that will engage our club and reinforce our already strong contribution culture

Public Relations – Chair: Nicole Ouellette
Continue public awareness of Rotary activities through Rotary Roundup, the Facebook page, and the website. Help publicize upcoming publicly open events in online and offline forums.  Meet quarterly as a committee to make sure we are adequately supporting member events, club events, and regular meetings. Run one PR campaign from January through April: I am Rotary. Including a member headshot and quote, to be shared on the Facebook page and other online properties to increase awareness of who is in Rotary and why they are a part of the organization. Continue the decorating of the Rotary float for the 4th of July parade. Increase PR committee participation rate by 100% (i.e. have at least 8 active committee members- at the last three meetings, we've had less than four members attend.) Would like to do more but definitely need help!

Club communications have been excellent through our club website, Facebook page and weekly bulletin.  The club distributes an average of 9 communications per month.

Membership – Chair: Doreen Willett (replaced by Carrie Jones and Steve Boucher)
Membership increased from 56 to 68, due in large part to the termination of the Associate Member pilot program when all associates (approximately 8-10) were converted to active. By the end of program year 2016, the makeup of members had shifted from 54/46% male to female to 51/49%. And, the club is aging, with the percentage of members under age 70 dropping form 54% to 50%.

Community Service – Chair: Shaun Farrar
Over the year, 224 volunteers have contributed 2,031 hours of service. And we have raised $23,640 through our fundraising efforts. Specifically, the club has undertaken the following projects and fundraisers:

International Service – Chair: Suzy Davis

Belize Wheelchair Project. In conjunction with the Ellsworth Rotary Club, we raised the funds for wheelchairs for people who need them in Belize. Rotarians from clubs in Bar Harbor and Ellsworth joined a contingent from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to help disabled residents of Belize. We traveled to Belize to deliver 126 wheelchairs and help fit them to their new owners. The wheelchairs were purchased from the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation. The project was the work of multiple Rotary clubs from four distinct geographical Rotary districts. Nine Rotary clubs in Belize helped locate and distribute the wheelchairs to those who needed them. “This is a good thing that Rotary makes possible for us to do, not just our club but our district,” said Shaun Farrar, the Bar Harbor club’s incoming president.

Following on the heels of a successful wheelchair distribution in Panama in 2015, the clubs applied for a Rotary International district grant to help support the effort for Belize. In all, 17 North American Rotarians traveled to Belize, making those connections and bringing with them multiple items to try to make an impact. Club members not only raised money for the wheelchairs, but journeyed to Belize and help fit the wheelchairs to the needy people.

Interact Club. The club continues to support a robust and active Interact club the MDI High School. Interact is for students between the ages of 12 and 18. They tackle issues in their community. MDI High School’s Interact Club is part of the Bar Harbor (Mount Desert Island) Rotary Club, a service organization open to new members and committed to helping its community. The students that participate as part of the Interact Club are outstanding and their help is valuable to this community. In just the past year, the local chapter has helped with the Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival, MDI YWCA, Friends of Acadia Clean-up, DownEast Horizons prom, painted the Hancock County SPCA, raised money to combat human trafficking and a multitude of other service projects. The club not only carries out hands-on service projects, but develops leadership skills amongst its members. And, 12 members represented Maine at the Rotary Day at the United Nations.

We update our website or social media accounts 50 times per month, and place 50 media stories each year covering the club's projects. We use both social media and RI produced advertising/public service materials in promoting our club. We continue to use the I AM ROTARY campaign as well as supporting club members and projects across multiple news and social media channels. We created three videos to promote the club with help from Thom Willey. We revitalized the Seafood Festival website and supported the efforts of MDI High School Interact Club. Carrie's efforts were noticed and she became both the Public Image Coordinator for District 7790 and the Assistant Public Image Coordinator for Zone 24 East.
