Many thanks to Steve Boucher for taking care of our meeting last week while I was at the zone conference in Montreal training Rotary’s district governors and district public image chairs.
For those of you who are new to the club, our district is a part of ZONE 24, which works with ZONE 32. Rotary International Zones 24 & 32 is a four-country, two-language community of Rotarians in Bermuda, Canada, France and United States spanning seven time zones. You can find out more about it here.
Since I was there, I was able to listen to Canada’s former Prime Minister Paul Martin and Rotary International Director Jeffry Cadorette. When the Right Honourable Paul Martin was eight-years-old, he contracted polio. He remembers being in the hospital room and someone pointing to a giant Iron Lung.
"What's that?" he asked.
"That's the Iron Lung. You'll be in there," they said.
Paul Martin survived polio. So did his father, although his father was forever weak on one side of his body and didn't have vision in one eye. Paul Martin became the Prime Minister of Canada and founded the Martin Family Foundation. And last week, he not only received an award from Rotary International, he became an honorary Rotarian at his local club. He was not the only one who was visibly moved.
The point of Rotary is to bring people together to help their local community and the world. It's a spot of goodness in the world. There are 1.2 million of us all around the world. But we need more. We need you to take action and change your world for better. Please bring friends to meetings. Please offer to serve on committees and volunteer for our events.
