It’s been a very busy month for the BBRC. We have just completed the Police Officer of the Year event and now we are full steam ahead with the preparations for our 45th Anniversary celebration this coming Friday and Saturday.
There has been some great work done behind the scenes to make the weekend fun and enjoyable for our overseas visitors as well as our members and guests. I would like to thank the Committee for their hard work in bringing the event to life.
Thank you to Past President Bruce and the PCYC for assisting with transportation by providing us with the use of a mini bus. We do require a driver for Saturday, can any member please help!
Beginning on Friday the 3rd with the morning arrival of our Sister Club visitors  and in the evening we will be welcoming our Guests at the BBRC Hub for an Aussie BBQ which will be attended by our past member and current  QPS Police Commissioner Ian Stewart and his wife. It promises to be a great evening.
The next day Saturday some site seeing , lunch and  a visit to Griffith Uni to view the Malaria Vaccine Project is planned. You are all welcome to join us during the day. If you are able to volunteer your support for the day please let Pauline know of your intention.
Followed in the evening by the main event, the Broadbeach Rotary Club 45th  Anniversary Dinner to be held at the Southport Golf Club. We look forward to welcoming all guests including Past Presidents and past Members.
Please come and support our 45th Anniversary as it will be a fantastic opportunity to welcome and meet our Sister Club Rotarians.
If you haven’t done so yet there is still time to book in.
The Kasaoka Rotarians have their accommodation arranged .Most of the Tauranga Rotarians will be home hosted. Thank you to the members who have been kind enough to open their homes to our Sister Club visitors.
Please join us in celebrating our BBRC 45th Anniversary. It promises to be a great weekend and I look forward to welcoming members, visitors and guests next weekend.

I have so many funny stories of our arrival time in NZ about 40 years ago which I prefer to talk about it when we have an anecdote Rotary meeting night. However, this time I decided to just share one of many from PNG time.
17 years ago, I was employed by a PNG IT company called Datec as their  web and internet manager. On the first week of my work in this company, I realised there is so much running around by staff that felt quite unusual to me. First, I said wooo this is such a busy place and how can I also get into this routine of being busy and running around like them? Then in the 2nd week I realise all the busy people and the running around is due to the lack of proper organisation and structure in the place. So, everyone has to run around finding those who may know what is next to do, where is the key to a store, or how much they should chart a customers, etc!
Anyway, at the end of the 1st week, the CEO called me to his office and asked me what do I need to get me started with the customers? I said having business cards will be a useful start! I was in his office when he called one of the staff members called Morris who was responsible for the design and printing of the business cards and told him Nasser needs business cards. Morris said yes sir and disappeared for 2 weeks after which the company CEO called me to his office again and said your business cards are ready if you want to pick them up. With anticipation, I rushed to his office and got the pack of the cards and decided to open it and give the first one to him as a souvenir. When I opened the pack, I realise the first card was CEO’s business card with his name and details, so I looked at the next and the next and found all are his business cards. With surprise I told him all of these are yours and not mine! He said because you were in my office when I told Morris you need business cards, he thought, with his PNG logic, you need my cards and so printed 100 of my cards for you! Anyway, he called Morris again and this time asked me to create a template of a business card with my details on it so that Morris doesn’t print another 100 business cards for the CEO and eventually after 1 month I got my business cards!

Niagara Falls was lit in blue and gold Tuesday night, 24 October, in recognition of World Polio Day, an annual event established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
 
The World Health Organization has followed a strategy to eradicate polio by immunizing every child until transmission ends and the world becomes polio-free.

The Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach Incorporated, will be held on Tuesday 21st November 2017 at the Quality Hotel Mermaid Waters 4218 commencing at 7.00pm

UPCOMING ROTARY EVENTS
 
BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FRIDAY 3 AND SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER 
This milestone celebration is rapidly approaching and we will be joined by our Sister Clubs for the occasion and we will have 9 representatives from Tauranga and a further nine from kasaoka.
Friday evening informal welcome BBQ at The Hub to welcome our overseas guests (partners and friends welcome)
6.00pm for 6.30pm. $25 per person.
Register via the website as usual or contact Pauline Armstrong.
Saturday: A program of sightseeing including lunch is being arranged for our overseas guests and culminating with a visit to the Malaria Vaccine Project at Institute of Glycomics, Griffith University at 2.00pm.
The 45th Anniversary Dinner will be held at Southport Golf Club 6.30pm for 7.00pm (partners and friends welcome).  Cost $45 per person.
If you have not already registered, please contact Pauline Armstrong who is liaising with the Southport Golf Club re numbers.
 
These events will replace our normal weekly meeting on 31 October and as usual, we will not have a meeting the following Tuesday, Melbourne Cup Day.
 
 
POLIOPLUS MOVIE NIGHT WEDNESDAY 8 NOVEMBER
 
 
Every ticket sold will result in a $12 contribution to PolioPlus - Contact Neil Jones (0418 663 740) for tickets. Get in early as there are only 200 tickets available for all Gold Coast Clubs and we have already sold 19 at Broadbeach.
Payment in advance please to Neil Jones. Neil will have tickets available at the Arts Centre on the night.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 24 OCTOBER 2017

David O’Dwyer, the Sargeant opened the meeting and called on Alex Jordan to propose a toast.
Alex discussed his time as a Charter member in New Zealand.
Alain Charles welcomed the guest Margaret Grummitt an ex policeperson and a member of Parkwood Rotary.
Alain mentioned last week’s Police Officer of the Year Awards and thanked Ray, Bruce, Harold and Pauline for their efforts.  He noted that there had been good feedback from the police however some members were concerned that although Rotary was mentioned there was nothing about Broadbeach Rotary.
Les Bulluss was the acting Chairman and he introduced the guest speaker Margaret to discussed the housekeeping for the Commonwealth games.
Margaret who has experience as prosecutor for domestic violence, a former Gold Coast Councillor and is also the Honorary Consul to the Phillipines.
Margaret is currently assisting in recruiting volunteers to undertake the cleaning of the village for the week prior to the games, during the two weeks of the games and the following weekend.
It was noted that Melbourne Rotarians had earned $750,000 by undertaking the cleaning during the Melbourne games.  The contractors are offering $20 per hour and there are three categories to cover vacuuming, windows, changing linen etc.
There would be a requirement of 200 volunteer persons each day to cover the cleaning of the games accommodation.  Brisbane Rotarians would also be included and they could travel down on the heavy rail to Helensvale and then the light rail to the village.  Rotary has been given one week to advise if they are prepared to be involved and we were advised that we could call on some of the charities we have assisted in the past as there only needs to be one Rotarian with three assistants in each group of volunteers.
Margaret spoke of her experiences and the path to becoming the Honorary Consul for the Philippines.   
We were advised that all venues are finished however there is an uncertainty in regard to public transport.
The wine winner of the raffle was Pauline and Heads and Tails Bob Jordan.
Margaret left the meeting to allow the members to discuss the games volunteering issue.
The silver circle winners were Ian Cowan, Bill Rex and Noel Hodges
Neil Jones mentioned World Polio Day and a film night is to be held on 8th November with a new version of the Murder on the Orient Express and cost will be $20.00 per ticket and the funds earned will go toward our polio eradication program.
Alain noted that there will not be a meeting next week as there will be a function at the Hub on Friday 3rd November.

Two fellows stepped into an English pub for a drink. They called the proprietor over and asked him to settle an argument.

They moved back along the bar and soon the barmaid asked for their order.
"Two pints please, miss, and the bartender offered to buy them for us."
The barmaid doubted that her boss would be so generous, so one of the fellows called out to the proprietor at the other end of the bar, "You did say two pints, didn't you?"
"That's right," he called back, "two pints."

It was time for the final and the student depending upon getting at least one right answer on the chemistry test.
The question was "If H2O is water, what is H2O4?"
This was a quick question for most, but it took the student some thinking time.
Finally, he wrote down his answer: For drinking, washing, and cleaning.
