Hello Broadbeach Rotarians,

The Hub has once again proven to be a fantastic venue for the BBRC. Thirty seven members, partners, guests and visitors were in attendance and ably catered for by our chef Chris and Lynn. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by all. We also had two prospective members in Paul Cassell and Nigel Hyland attend. Thank you to Bill Rex for introducing those two new prospects.

To be fair to others Administration Director Bob has asked if all members attending our Tuesday meetings to please book in early, either via the website or call Bob to reserve your seat to ensure that everyone gets a meal. I cannot stress enough how vital it is to book in early.

We also heard from Andrew McTaggart ‘s daughter Emma McTaggart. Emma’s project is in support of the Homeless of the Gold Coast. As in previous years she is seeking the support of the BBRC to help her out with Xmas Hampers.

See you all next Tuesday at the Holiday Inn.

I am delighted to report that during the week the Board approved a payment of $1000 to Emma McTaggart. Each year Emma makes up Christmas hampers for the needy. Last year she made 130 and is aiming for 150 this year. Congratulation to Emma for continuing with the wonderful community service project.

We are always very keen to boost the membership of the Club, and to ensure that the application is processed in line with the requirements of the Clubs' bylaws, as well as ensuring a fast and accurate process of a membership application, the following is the procedure that needs to be followed.

The procedure to be followed for a new member is:

Is the applicant a current financial member of another Rotary Club?
- If YES this will be just a transfer and the Club Secretary will require a completed application form and details of the persons current Rotary Club to enable verification of dates etc., with that Clubs Secretary – no subscription fee would be applicable
- If NO then the applicant will need to:
  - Complete the application form which includes being proposed and seconded
  - Attend 3 Club meetings
  - Be made aware of the rules and activities of Rotary in general and our Club in particular
  - Be made aware of the yearly subscription fee (if joins during the year a pro rata amount would be applicable)
  - The completed application form is returned to the Club Secretary who will circulate details of the applicant to ALL members who have seven (7) days to lodge any objection. There being no objection a date for induction will be set.

MEMBER ANECDOTES

Some time ago, Robyn and I booked, with some other Rotarian friends, a fourteen days trip on the Rhine from Prague to Amsterdam. As we had booked a couple of years prior to departure we had time to look forward to it and plan our side trips. As luck would have it, when we boarded the ship, we were upgraded to the best cabins on it, along with a butler who delivered delicious small snacks along with pre-dinner drinks each day. It was a leisurely trip where we travelled at night and stopped in a different city each day where we could explore the town or take an excursion to somewhere nearby.

One such excursion was to Salzburg where we learnt that the Bishop of Salzburg installed his wife in one mansion and his mistress in another mansion. Over time we were told he fathered at least 13 children.

Other cities/towns visited included Nuremberg, Bamberg, Vienna, Passau, Wertheim, Regensberg, Frankfurt, Paris and some others I can’t recall.

In Strassborg we duly visited the rotunda from the Sound of Music and instead of singing we are 16 going on 17, we sang we are 60 going on 70 which tells you that most of the other passengers on the ship were not teeny boppers.

In Wertheim, over a drink in the local, we spied a painting in the window of a local art gallery which we just had to have. After much negotiation in broken English and worse German we managed to secure a painting now proudly hanging in our entry hall.

Lastly one day out from Amsterdam we suffered from the first lock strike in over thirty years so our ship could not make the last day into port. We were bussed into Amsterdam instead but still had a canal tour.

Overall a tremendous trip and well worth the effort.

Extracts from District Governor's update to Club presidents

11.1 - Redistricting

The developing story:-

The Clarence Valley clubs - Grafton, Grafton Midday, Maclean, Yamba & Iluka-Woombah wish to remain with our district. I have had this approved by RI Director Noel Trevaskis & District 9650 to the south of us. I have informed the Redistricting committee in Queensland of this development. This means that only Glen Innes will be leaving the new district to head southwards provided redistricting is approved at the business session at my conference. I am now fairly confident that this will occur. We are near the end of the story.

11.2 - Distribution of district surpluses

Three months ago I informed you that the District Finance Committee approved the spend down of $12,000 per year over the next 10 years of district surpluses. In light of the developments on redistricting & that we will be formed into a mega district by 1st July 2021 & also receiving $98,000 from the defalcation, it is obvious that we should spend down more reserves at a faster rate. To be fair to all clubs who are part of our district now, we should be assisting clubs who have contributed to the build up of these reserves before redistricting occurs.

The good news is:-

1. - We will release approximately $60,000 per year over the next 3.5years to leave a reserve of $100,000.

2. - As of 1 July 2018 there will be no conference levy per member. District dues will be more affordable & should decrease by about $30.00 per year.

3. - Any new Satellite club will receive $2,500 as seed money.

4. - Any new Rotary club will receive $5,000 seed money.

5. - The balance of funds will be set aside for applications that demonstrate a need.

11.3 - Distribution of the Youth Working Fund of $85,000

Three months ago the Youth Trust Fund Committee approved the spend down of the Youth Working Fund of $85,000 & its interest over a 10 year period. This has been accelerated to a 3.5 year program resulting in a spend down of $28,000 per year to service disadvantaged youth in our district. The criteria for approval will be treated on a case by case basis. It does not mean that clubs that can’t afford to nominate candidates for youth programs will be financed. We still expect clubs to find clubs to adopt their orphans as has happened in the past. It means that we will assist youth whose parents cannot afford to allow their children to go on youth programs where they would have to pay additional monies. At our last meeting we approved $400.00 to another club to assist with expenses associated with the ConocoPhillips experience. Any new applications need to be received by our District Secretary, Sue Randel by 11 February 2018.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

With Rotary Foundation month now behind us and we move ahead into Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Month, it is appropriate to provide an update on Global Polio Eradication which is of course Rotary International's biggest ever project.

As at the end of November there had been 16 new cases of polio this year to date compared with 34 at the same time last year and 37 in the 2016 full year.

These cases have all occurred in endemic countries ( Afghanistan 11 (last year 13) and Pakistan 5 (last year 18); there was also 4 cases in Nigeria last year)

It is now more than 15 months since the last reported case in Nigeria. The last case in Pakistan was reported on 21 August 2017 and with only 5 cases this year, good progress is being made.

Afghanistan remains the major concern with cases only marginally below last year and the latest being reported on 5 November 2017.

Hopefully that may even have been the last case ever to be reported - fingers crossed.

Sergeant Kevin called on Member John Monks for this evenings Toast.

John proposed his Toast to all the Commonwealth Games Volunteers.

Sergeant Kevin introduces President Alain Charles who welcomed all Members, Members Partners, Pam Hawkins, Lorraine Hawton, Gay Cowan, Pat Curr, Hailee Diez, Partner of Member John Monks.

President Alain also welcomed Guests Phil Geurin, invited by Robert Jordan, Jaiden Granada, Grandson of Jim and Pam Hawkins, Nigel Hyland invited by Bill Rex, Paul Cassell and Peter Sutton also invited by Bill Rex and Emma McTaggart Daughter of Member Andrew McTaggart.

President Alain also gave a big welcome to Honorary Members Uwe Seifert, Ian Cowan.and Keith Hawton.

Member Graham Sivyer entertained us for most of the evening on the Mandolin.

Emma McTaggart gave us an update on her very own Charity raising funds to supply hampers for the homeless.

Once again chef Chris served us a very good meal with a choice between fish and chicken and cheesecake and ice cream for desert.

Sergeant Kevin did his very best to empty our pockets before Christmas.

27 Rotarians and 10 Guests enjoyed the Social Evening.
