Hello Fellow Rotarians
This week we celebrated the 13th Police Officer of the Year Award evening.
 
It was a most enjoyable evening hosted by our club in the company of DG Darryl Brown, Assistant Commissioner Mr Brian Codd and wife Madonna, Councillor Paul Taylor and Yvonne. Chief Superintendent Marty Michelsen, PDG Michael Irving and past winners and visiting Rotarians from the Southport Club.
Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd confirmed that this is a unique event in QLD that praises and acknowledges the work that Police encounter daily.
I would like to once again congratulate all nominees and the Winners of the various awards on the night.
 
A very special mention to the Rotary Club of Southport and President Rhonda Whitton for given up their venue on the night so we could host the awards there.
 
My personal thanks  from the PCYC Sergeant Linda Baade and Rotarians - Committee Chair Ray Milton, Bruce Kuhn, Neil Jones, Bill Waller and Pauline Armstrong. Congratulations on a great job in bringing this event to life.
 
I look forward to welcoming you all on Tuesday at the Quality Hotel.

This week I have included some excerpts from the minutes of the Board meeting held on 3rd October.

All members are also most welcome to attend Board meetings the next being 14th November.
 
Reports:
President  
Today is the 4th meeting of the Broadbeach Rotary Club at our new venue the Quality Hotel.
It seems that we have been welcomed and respected by the management of the hotel.
From the outside looking in we have been looked after by the wait staff. The 2 course meals at $25 have been enjoyable and it appears that all members are enjoying meeting here. It is hard to meet everyone’s expectations but we have fielded very few complaints.
Harold and I visited Cedar House to announce that the District Grant has been approved. They were extremely grateful and are looking forward to the Broadbeach Rotary club joining them in progressing the work that is required to be completed. Harold will be liaising with the management of Cedar House and intend forming a committee to get the work started.
So far we have had some enjoyable evenings with interesting guest speakers in our very own David O’Dwyer who addressed us on the initial evening at the Quality Hotel followed by an enjoyable partners night the following Tuesday.
Thank you to Ray Milton, Bruce and the committee for ensuring POOTY in full swing.
Followed by Pauline who is also ensuring the 45th Anniversary will go ahead after a few difficult days.
I would sincerely like to thank Secretary Tony for plugging so many gaps whilst some of our Board members are on leave.
All in all it has been a very good month and the decision to leave Crowne Plaza has been very well received by Broadbeach Rotary Club members
  • Service
The Service Director advised that he had met with Bunnings regarding the Cedar House sensory gardens project and was also working with Bunnings regarding their (Bunnings) contribution to the Rosemary House project.
Moved Harold Busch, seconded Alain Charles that “the Board match the Rotary Grant of $4000 to be used at Sensory Garden at Cedar House and as required at Rosemary House”

  • Youth
The Youth Director advised that he had Emailed schools (Marymount. Merrimac. Varsity. Somerset) asking for nominations for RYTS. Students will be selected on a needs basis.
It was noted that the Youth Director was building up an excellent rapport with schools.
 
General business
  • Young Achiever  Award - The future of the very prestigious community award
It was noted that the Young Achiever Award had been cancelled twice in the last 3 years and that it was getting difficult to get support from members especially in regard to nominations. It was also noted that Radio station 92.5 is currently running a Young Achiever project.
It was suggested that a meeting be held with the Chamber of Commerce who could find suitable candidates.
The President to investigate the feasibility of this. However, there will be a need for a member to coordinate such a program.
  • Dates for the AGM and the audited financial accounts to be circulated to members beforehand.
It was agreed that the Annual General meeting will be held on Tuesday 21st November 2017, at which time that the audited accounts will have been received from the auditors

MEMBER ANECDOTES

Some of you may know that many years ago I practised from my medical centre across the road from the Quality Inn Tavern where we now meet for Rotary.  It came to my attention that our telephone account had escalated enormously.  Details showed that every Sunday night between 8  and 10pm hundreds of dollars in calls were made to two international numbers. The surgery closed at 8pm on Sundays so this was hard to fathom, and furthermore I found this had been going on for more than 6 months.  Telstra proved to be no help, I really shouldn’t have been surprised!  They simply indicated in no uncertain terms that it was my responsibility to monitor my own telephone.
So I started my sleuthing.  Our cleaner arrived at the surgery at 10pm every Sunday night so he was my first suspect. I cased the surgery at 9 pm thinking I would nab him on the phone, however he didn’t arrive until 10pm.  His genuine response to my assertions was that he was an orphan and a Christian and had no relatives or friends overseas.  He was so sincere I believed him.   I carried on with my detective work and returned to the premises for a further two Sunday nights but nothing happened, and I did not receive any further bills for those nights.  I was stumped. I was now resigned to the fact that I would have to pay for someone using my telephone illegally.
But hey presto!  Enter the Federal police.  They were requesting to install a camera on the roof of the medical centre. They were confident of regular drug deals going down in the car park of the then Lone Star Tavern.  A thought flashed through my mind, maybe they could help, after all they were real detectives. I explained the mystery telephone calls and lack of interest from Telstra and they agreed to help me in return for locating the camera.
 Sometime later they appeared in the surgery enquiring if I knew a person with a particular surname.  I looked through the computer database and had no patients or staff with that name.  It turns out that two calls were made every Sunday night, lasting approximately an hour each, and both of the people called in Europe had the same surname. It was shared by only one other person in Australia, and guess what?  This person lived in Broadbeach.  They kindly paid him a visit and despite his denials they searched his unit.  They discovered a telephone with a 30 foot extension cord at the end of which was a bulldog clip.  He had been parking his car in the car park, attaching the bulldog clip to my outside-mounted phone signal box, and sitting in his car having lovely long chats to both his mother and his wife at my expense!
The happy conclusion to this story was that the Federal Police contacted Telstra, who returned all my money.  The caller was charged with theft and they also successfully charged a drug dealer.

Mark Daniel Maloney selected to be 2019-20 Rotary president

Mark Daniel Maloney declared President Nominee.

Having received no challenges, Rotary International President Ian Riseley declared Mark Daniel Maloney as Rotary's president nominee on 1 October. He will be elected at the 2018 RI Convention in Toronto, Canada and will become President on 1 July 2019.

        “The clubs are where Rotary happens,” says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support and strengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary’s culture as a service-oriented 

        membership organization, and test new regional approaches for growth.

        “With the eradication of polio, recognition for Rotary will be great and the opportunities will be many,” he says. “We have the potential to become the global powerhouse for doing good.”

UPCOMING ROTARY EVENTS
 
BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FRIDAY 3 AND SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER 
Planning is underway for this milestone celebration and invitations have been extended to our Sister Clubs with early indications that we will have 9 representatives from Tauranga and a further nine from kasaoka.
The program is still being finalised but will include a welcome BBQ at The Hub on Friday evening and the 45th Anniversary Dinner at Southport Golf Club on Saturday 4 November. 
These events will replace our normal weekly meeting on 31 October and as usual, we will not have a meeting the following Tuesday, Melbourne Cup Day.
Full program details will be provided shortly but please mark your diary accordingly.
 
BROADBEACH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY TUESDAY 19 DECEMBER

Join us online for World Polio Day 2017

You don’t have to buy a plane ticket to participate in this year’s World Polio Day festivities at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s facility in downtown Seattle, Washington, USA. You can watch the event live on 24 October at 14:30 Seattle time (7.30am Wednesday 25 October our time) for an update on our global campaign to eradicate polio. A recording of the livestream will be available later.

Sue Desmond-Hellmann, the Gates Foundation’s chief executive, will discuss this year’s progress with attendees, including Rotary members, Gates Foundation staff, and supporters, as well as the audience watching worldwide via livestream. Only 11 new cases of wild poliovirus have been reported so far in 2017, all in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Other speakers will include Jay Wenger, director of the Gates Foundation’s polio eradication efforts; Dean Rohrs, vice president of Rotary International; wrestler John Cena and singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage, Rotary polio ambassadors; Ade Adepitan, a Paralympian and polio survivor; and Jeffrey Kluger, senior editor at Time magazine overseeing science and health reporting. 

Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield, stars of the upcoming movie “Breathe,” and director Andy Serkis will also speak. “Breathe” is based on the true story of a polio survivor who became an advocate for others.

At 7.00pm sharp guests were encouraged to be seated by the piper who then played the National Anthem.
 
Joint MC's Bruce Paige and Wendy from Channel Nine then outlined the formalities for the evening and introduced the Broadbeach Rotary Club President.
 
President Alain welcomed 162 members & guests to the Southport Golf Club for the 2017 Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Awards night.
Alain did our club proud with a well composed and equally well presented speech and welcome - congratulations Alain.
 
Alain's welcome was followed by an equally impressive address from Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd.
 
Dinner comprising alternate drop main course and sweets followed.
 
The formal part of the evening commenced with Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd, Gold Coast District Officer Marty Mickelson and President Alain on stage to make the presentations.
 
There were six nominees for the Civilian Support Officer of the Year - Tracey Abbott (Child Protection & Investigation Unit), Claire Bradshaw (Mudgeeraba Station), Tracy Hocart (Surfers Paradise), Jasyiyah Abdul Kadir (Police Liaison Officer), Samantha McMahon (Major Events Group) and Adrian Seeto (Computer Support) and the winner was Tracey Abbott.
 
Next up was the Station/Unit of the Year with four nominations - Coomera Road Policing Unit, Domestic & Family Violence Task Force,, Gold Coast Prosecutions and Mudgeeraba Police Station and the winner was The Domestic & Family Violence Task Force.
 
Before moving on to the "Big One" President Alain made a special presentation to Sergeant Linda Baade of the Gold Coast PCYC to acknowledge her support over many years to the Awards Night as well as her support to the community  and her tireless efforts towards Youth programs on the Gold Coast.
 
Twelve nominees for Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year were introduced; Detective Sergeant Nicola Brown (Northern Crime Group), Senior Constable Tracey Clouston (Gold Coast Crime Prevention & PCYC), Senior Constable Kylee Cruickshank (Southport), Sergeant John Goobanko (Surfers Paradise), Detective Sergeant Grant Goodall (Major & Organised Crime Squad), Acting Senior Sergeant Kayleen James ( Domestic & Family Violence Task Force), Sergeant Holly James (OIC Gold Coast Crime Prevention Unit), Senior Constable Beau McNamara (Jacobs Well Police Beat), Senior Constable Daniel McShane (Gold Coast Prosecutions), Senior Constable Mitch Nelis (Broadbeach), Senior Constable Joel Spencer (Child Protection & Investigation Unit), Sergeant Lyndon O'Neil (Gold Coast Cross Cultural Unit) and Constable Siobahn Rhodes (Coomera).
 
The winner and the thirteenth Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year is Detective Sergeant Nicola Brown from the Northern Crime Group.

Two friends who grew old together made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other how life after death was. Their biggest fear was that there was no afterlife at all.
After a long life, Dan was the first to die. Benny mourned him and waited for him to come and visit.
True to his word, two months later, as Benny was sleeping, the voice of Dan appeared in his head.
"Benny...Benny..."
"My gosh... Is that you, Dan?"
"Yes, I've come back like we agreed."
"That's wonderful!  What's it like?"
"Well, I get up in the morning, I have s*x. I have breakfast and then it's off to the golf course. I have s*x again, bathe in the warm sun and then have s*x  a couple more times... then I have lunch (keeping healthy, lots of greens).
Another romp around the golf course, then pretty much have s*x  the rest of the afternoon. After supper, it's back to the golf course again. Then it's more is*x  until late at night. I catch some much-needed sleep and then the next day it starts all over again".
