Club Meeting at The Hub - Guest Speaker from PCYC

Guest Speaker Andre Booyzen re the PCYC with their "Braking The Cycle" (BTC) program.

The PCYC is looking for more mentors, so the program’s supervisor and would like to visit some Rotary clubs to outline the program and – hopefully – find a few more volunteers.

In essence, BTC works as follows:

1. Disadvantaged young people who don’t have access to a car and can’t afford driving lessons, are in a ‘Catch 22’ situation where they can’t get (or take) a job because they don’t have a license and/or can’t get there due to lack of public transport
2. the PCYC provides a car, funded by the Qld Government. The PCYC also does all the administration, allocation of learners and mentors etc
3. The mentor accompanies learner drivers (quite carefully selected and well mannered – there are no hoons among them), imparting driving knowledge and helping them to build the requisite 100 hours of driving and gaining their license. The mentor never provides his/her own vehicle.
4. Mentors can stipulate when and what hours they want to participate. There is no specific obligation. For example, I do about 4 - 5 hours every week, usually on the same day, but there is flexibility as in holidays etc.
