The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club to Award Scholarships to qualified graduates at Lake Dallas and Fred Moore High Schools
These Scholarships are for qualified class seniors from the DLCRC sponsored Interact Clubs at Lake Dallas High School and Fred Moore High School. Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Interact Club members can connect with leaders in our community and around the world to:
Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. As sponsors DLCRC Rotarians mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills.  The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club is also offering Scholarship Opportunities for the Senior Class members of the two high schools where the clubs sponsor Interact Clubs; Lake Dallas High School and Fred Moore High School. The Denton Lake Cities Rotary Club has been providing scholarship awards to graduating Seniors for years. We have given over $108,000 in awards over the past 12 plus years. The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club Vocation Committee members perform extensive work and effort to select the deserving students. The funds for these scholarships come primarily from Denton-Lakes Cities Rotary Club Flag program. Graduating Senior Class members of the Lake Dallas High School and Fred Moore High School can apply for the scholarships to be awarded at the Spring graduation ceremonies for each school. The club will also be awarding scholarships to selected graduating seniors at the Fall ceremonies. Donors of $1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants program, or people who have that amount contributed in their name, can be recognized as Paul Harris Fellows. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate and a pin. Memorial Day in the Lake Cities Area Celebrated with our 1st Flag Launch of the Year
It's that time of year again when the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club puts out flags for their Flag Program.  Founded in 1992, with approximately 150 subscribers, the Flag Program is currently the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Clubs’ largest fundraiser. In 2021 the club planted more than 468 flags at commercial locations and at over 2000 residential.

Herman Oosterwijk delivers passionate presentation about the need for Radiology equipment in Uganda
A member of the Denton - Lake Cities morning club, he was a tremendous advocate for the Uganda Radiology Project. With the help of a Rotary Foundation 200K Global Grant, and funds matched by 9 Rotary Clubs, Herman traveled to the Batwa Community of Uganda to accompany the delivery, setup and calibration of the 4 ICU beds, portable Xray machines, monitors and teleradiology equipment.

Larry Patterson, Executive Director of the Upper Trinity Regional Water District shares details of the Lake Ralph Hall Project
Introduced by member Gene Davenport (Left), Larry provided and excellent presentarion on Texas' newest lake, Lake Ralph Hall. Lake Ralph Hall will be one of the state’s biggest water projects in the last 30 years. Named after the longtime US Congressman Ralph Hall from Rockwall, the reservoir will be located on the North Sulphur River in Southeast Fannin County. The project is being built by Upper Trinity Regional Water District (UTRWD) and will provide crucial water for an area whose population is projected to increase nearly five-fold in the next 50 years |

Denton-Lake Cities gives dictionaries to 3rd graders in Tri-City Area
David Becker and Gene Davenport with the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club were out distributing dictionaries this week to the third graders at the 2 Krum DISD elementary schools.  For many children, this is the first book they have ever owned. This year the DLCRC distributed 2700 dictionaries to 25 schools in Denton, 2 in Sanger, 3 in Argyle, 3 in Lake Dallas and 2 in Krum.

Fun times at Jan 17th Meeting
The Salvation Army Curbside Carolers played for the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club breakfast. In addition to their band, they gave us some insight into their organization and the service work they do.  The Salvation Army was founded in the U.K. in 1865 by William Booth as a volunteer "army" formed to do mission work - their motto was "Soup, Soap and Salvation". The "Red Kettle" project, which you see every Christmas time, was started in 1891 to help feed the poor. They became a presence in the U.S. in 1880 and in 1889 they came to Dallas.

Kazakhstan Education Delegates visit the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club
Rotary and the US Congress partner in a program called Open World. The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club members met the Education delegates from Kazakhstan over breakfast.  We learned about the culture, languages, religion, and more, of the Kazakhstan people. Later that evening, we all ate, drank, and sang in honor of our guests at Steve's Wine Bar.

Fred Moore High School Interact assembles "survival kits" for the homeless.
The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club sponsored Fred Moore High School Interact Club assembled over 70 "survival kits" for the homeless.  Stephanie Cooper and members of the Fred Moore High School Interact Club assembled over 70 "survival kits" for the homeless. The Interact Club is Fred Moore High School's student services organization. Club members meet weekly to work on community service projects. The annual goal is to complete 3 major service projects per school year. Thank you for your service to the community!

The Rotary Foundation awards Denton Lake Cities RC as No. 1 Club in District 5790
This award, for Rotary year 2019-2020 was awarded in recognition of our generous Rotary members. For year 2019-2020, Denton-Lake Cities Rotarians had the highest per capita giving of the 67 clubs in Rotary District 5790. The award was given at the November 5th Denim and Pearls Gala in Granbury, Texas. The Gala is an annual event to fundraise for The Rotary Foundation.

A Rotary meeting dedicated to learning about School Safety
Flanked by David Mays, Lieutenant SRO Commander Denton Police Dept., DISD Safety and Security Director and Derek Bradford, SRO Sergeant Denton Police Dept. Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club president dedicated our October 4th meeting to School Safety.  A Student Resource Officer, SRO, provides safety, security, mentorship, education, and prevention to DISD students, and has a dual role assisting both the city and the district. They conduct field trips, plan service projects for students, introduction classes to the different trades they pursue as a career, and also camping trips! Every middle and high school campus has at least one police officer assigned full-time. |
Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club delivers Buddy Bench to Ginnings ES
The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club delivered the 2nd of 5 Buddy Benches to Ginnings Elementary in Denton.  For 2 years the DLCRC collected 1000 lbs of plastic bottle caps. 96 volunteer hours were spent cleaning and sorting, and 120 man hours traveled to deliver the bottle caps and pick up the 5 buddy benches. This project describes perfectly what our membership is about...making the world a better place of our kids while improving our environment. The Rotary Club of Denton-Lake Cities recognized with Rotary Citation for 2021-2022
Rotary International President (2021-2022) recognized the Rotary Club of Denton-Lake Cities with the prestigious Rotary Citation. In Rotary District 5790, only 19 clubs were selected for this award. The Rotary Citation awards recognize the hard work clubs do throughout the year. Taking action toward achieving the citation goals helps clubs engage their members, stay relevant in their communities, and run more efficiently. A welcoming and engaging club also reflects the values of Rotary. When clubs achieve citation goals, they contribute to the overall health and culture of Rotary for generations to come. |

Direction 61:3 recognized for transitioning older foster care clients to thriving adults
The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Breakfast Club was pleased to present Jen Moore, Development Director and Ministry Engagement for Direction 61:3 Denton, with a donation. DIRECTION 61:3 is a faith-based organization purposed with helping youth transition from foster care into society as thriving adults. Their mission is to walk alongside older foster and aged out youth to provide a network of support as they transition to become vibrantly independent young adults.

Supporting children, youth, young adults and families so they can thrive.
Our August 18 speaker, Jaime Blantan, shared with our members the great work of the Cumberland Youth and Family Services organization does in support of the organizations mission to provide stable housing, counseling and support services for youth, young adults and families.  Denton-Lake Cities Rotary, a morning club was pleased to provide the Cumberland Youth and Family Services with a donation. Jaime Blantan spoke with us about the tremendous works this organization does. Cumberland Youth and Family Services, located in Denton, offers a compassionate community for those who need a safe place to call home.

The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary invites the family of our former member and city manager for Corinth, Bob Hart (deceased), to receive a donation for the Lake Cities Focus advocacy group at its Aug 2nd meeting. Lake Cities Focus is a nonprofit organization founded by Bob Hart. It was created from the desire of community members from Corinth, Hickory Creek, Lake Dallas, and Shady Shores to strengthen families and at risk youth through communication, activities, and education in the midst of pandemics, stress, and other uncertainties. Governor Dan Steele speaks with members at our Tuesday morning breakfast meeting. He opened with a quote by John Wesley "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can".
Mr. Steele introduced the 2022-23 Rotary International theme "Imagine Rotary" and explained the meaning behind the new logo stating, "Imagine what we can do in our communities through Rotary", that it's not what we do individually for Rotary but what we can do collectively. |
Meet our President for the 22-23 Rotary Year
Kevin Christ installed as President of the Denton Lake-Cities Rotary Club for the 2022-2023 fiscal year at our Annual Banquet on June 27th. Meet Kevin Kevin is an experienced financial professional dedicated to providing his clients with the tailored financial plans they deserve. Throughout his experience as a financial advisor, Kevin has managed over 300 agents representing over 40 different products. During this time, he learned about the importance of customized solutions and how a one-on-one financial planning experience can help clients reach their goals. Now, as the owner of KPC Financial Solutions, Kevin brings this commitment to every client. Kevin attended the University of Central Florida as a scholarship athlete on the baseball team and graduated with a degree in business. He earned his first license in the financial services industry in 1988. Kevin is licensed in securities and insurance. Kevin loves to play golf and scuba dive. He is active in his church, and he and his wife, Karin, love to sponsor church functions in their home. |

Another Buddy Bench in the making - turning Trash into Treasure
This is what I collected from LaGrone Academy. When President John Smyers asked me to take over as Buddy Bench coordinator, I said yes for 3 reasons…  We hope to have enough plastic to take to Indiana where they will grind and process it into plastic lumber to create a bench like this. 1) I love to travel and looked forward to going to Indiana. 2) I wanted my school to get one. 3) I was a former school counselor and gave many guidance lessons about inclusion, bullies, victims, and bystanders. So this project means something to me. Lisa Bonneau has said she would go with me. I have plenty of time this summer. I’m hoping we have what we need soon. |
Denton-Lake Cities RC People-of-Action turn trash into treasure
Members of the DLCRC Buddy Bench committee turned several trash bags filled with almost 1.5 ton of plastic bottle caps into 5 park benches on their May 2nd trip to Indiana.   Lest you think there may have been some magic in those plastic caps they found, please know there were several volunteer hours spent collecting, sorting, removing labels and categorizing the materials we delivered to the Indiana based recycler.

A very busy week end for those People-of-Action - Part 1
The week-end started with a Camping Trip to Willow Grove Park in Lake Dallas. Several of our "hardy" members braved the great outdoors on a beautiful Friday evening enjoying some great fellowship and camping fun.       How does that kumbaya song go again???  The inaugural DLCRC Campout was a success. Beautiful weather, excellent food, and great company. To top that off, we provided community service to the wonderful Lake Dallas Willow Grove Park. Looking forward to doing it again next year. Great time to be a Rotarian.  |
A very busy People-of-Action week-end of Service - Part 2
Members of the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club spent their Saturday (May 7) with our partners from the Young Men's Service League (YMSL) improving the environment by building pollinator gardens.  Pollinators—i.e., insects that move pollen from one flower to another—are in decline. Pollinator decline is attributed primarily to the loss of habitat and to the use of pesticides. Urbanization is occurring at an alarming rate; our green space is disappearing. Green space is often converted to land for crops or planted with non-native plants that do not support or host local insects that carry out pollination. By creating gardens in an urban are with the appropriate native plant selection we are making our effort to reverse the trend. In this case our gardens are being built at the Denton Serves building.

Thanks to Chad Eskew and Jason Young from Denton Freedom House for coming out sharing your awesome mission.  Denton Freedom House accomplishes its mission through the Freedom Pantry and Zerba Coffee. Denton Freedom House operates a womens program, a mens program and the Freedom Food Pantry. The next time you are in downtown Denton, stop by and check out the the menu at Zebra Coffee on E. McKinney. Your relaxing cup of java also supports the efforts of the Denton Freedom House.

DLCRC Members learn about Electricity and Gas Distriburion
Rotarians constantly seek to educate themselves about our community and the businesses that serve our community.  On March 29th, club members devoted their club social to learning. Specifically, learning about how electricity and natural gas our distributed safely throughout the communities of Denton, Corinth, Hickory Creek, Lake Dallas and Shady Shores.

Denton-Lake Cities Rotary announces 4 Way Speech Contest Winner
The Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club 4 Way Speech Contest Winner is Tariah Choice. Congratulations Tariah! The Contest was held Friday, March 25, 2022. Many thanks to the judges. From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. Denton-Lake Cities Rotarians join forces with 2 other clubs to Support the Environment
On Saturday, March 19th, members from the Denton-Lake Cities RC joined members from two other local Rotary Clubs for the "Clear Lake Texas Service Project" The trash pickings were multiple as this group of 9 energetic and apparently strong Rotarians removed 14 bags of trash, traffic cones, barrels, chairs of all kinds and even concrete traffic barriers.  Thank you Rotary! Supporting our Environment and improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

Lake Cities Chamber of Commerce President, Tina Henderson speaks at Mar 15 Meeting
Tina Henderson joined us last Tuesday for our weekly meeting to provide a great update on the business growth in the Lake Cities area that includes Corinth, Hickory Creek, Lake Dallas and Shady Shores. The Lake City Chamber of Commerce has taken a major leadership roll in connecting with and advocating for business that serve Corinth, Hickory Creek, Lake Dallas and Shady Shores. Tina shared with us some exciting business ventures taking place in the Lake Cities area. |
Denton-Lake Cites Rotary wins TASB award for its Literacy Projects
We are very proud to win the TASB Recognition through Denton ISD for our efforts with the Dictionary Program and our support of Interact Clubs in the high schools. The Texas Association of School Business professionals has awarded us its Stand-up for Texas Schools award for the litereacy projects such as the Dictionary Project, Adopt-a-School and Interact Clubs in the high schools.  |
DLCRC Members Collect and Sort Plastics for Buddy Bench Project
Members gave up a February Saturday morning to participate in a sorting party that included coffee and donuts. What could be better? We collected 854 lbs of plastics lids etc that will be turned into Buddy Benches promoting anti bullying and clean environment. Proud to be a Rotarian. Service above Self.  |
Denton-Lake Cities RC wins Silver Award from Shelter Box
Shelter Box presented its Silver Award to the our club. Shelter Box provides emergency shelter to communities stricken by natural disaster and conflict. Delivering aid by hand, foot, boat, helicopter or even tuk-tuk. Lake Cities Rotary has had a long standing relationship with Shelrer Box through Past President Brian Glenn who also serves as the Rotary District 5790 representative for Shelter Box. Because of this relationship, our club has donated thousands to this effort over the last several years.   |
Through Operation Christmas Child, Denton Lake Cities Rotary made Christmas brighter for 78 kids
Member Generosity, Time and Talent provided Christmas presents to 78+ Children  Taking time out at our meetings last fall members prepared gifts for 78 Children. Working with Operation Christmas Child we were able to find out what the children needed and wanted and arranged with the folks at Operation Christmas Child to have those gifts delivered in time for Christmas. |
