Humane Society of Wichita County
Locally owned and operated, and are not affiliated with any national animal welfare organization. They do not receive any funding from local or state governmental agencies. 100% of their operating expenses come from the generosity of individuals, businesses, and foundations in our community.
Average monthly operating expense is $35,000 to provide shelter, food, medication, spaying/neutering, chipping, grooming, and other services to prepare animals for adoption.
During the past seven years they have achieved the designation of a “No Kill” shelter. Shelters that have a greater than 90% save rate are classified as “no kill”. Since 2016, their save rate has been over 96%.
The Humane Society offers boarding services for dogs at $25 per night. Owners provide the dog’s favorite food and bedding. The dogs are boarded in a separate facility from dogs waiting to be adopted. There is an attached yard so dogs can get exercise throughout the day.
Some of the services offered are:
Dogs Spay or Neuter - $55 (must be under 60 lbs and under 7 years old)
Female Cats - $35 (must be under 7 years old)
Male Cats - $35 (must be under 7 years old)
Heartworm test for dogs - $20
Feline leukemia test - $20
Supplies are always needed. Below is a list of things you can donate.
Dog Supplies: Kong toys and treats, leashes, harnesses, soccer balls and other size balls, Frisbees, squeaky toys, milk bones (medium and large size) and other treats, peanut butter and Velveeta cheese. Also needed are metal food and water bowls, crates (all sizes), washable pet beds and dry dog food.
Cat Supplies: Toys, cat litter, litter boxes, litter box scoopers, metal food and water bowls, and cat food.
Office Supplies: Copy paper, tape, envelopes, stamps, pens, and pencils.
Cleaning Supplies: Large and small trash bags, bleach, rubber cleaning gloves, dishwashing liquid, liquid laundry detergent, liquid hand soap, hand sanitizer, and cleaning products such as Fabuloso.
Brief History
1963: Toni, Lela Porter and Billie Pearce purchased a business on Peterson Road for $300 from an elderly man who traded and sold stray animals. Within a week, 10 people were working to feed the animals, clean and patch up the building, etc.
1968: Filed for state tax exemption as a nonprofit and was approved.
1970: Land was purchased at present location.
1972: Moved from the old house from Peterson Road.
1973: Built a new shelter consisting of 24 do runs, cattery, cat receiving room, grooming room, kitchen, food storage room, office and lobby.
1977: Received education building from SAFB, due to efforts of City and General Cecil Fox, base commander. Volunteers from SAFB included skilled craftsmen of all kinds completed the facility.
1978: Met with city manager and reached an agreement about housing all city animals from A/C.
1979: Animal Reclaim Center was completed April 1, 1979 just in time for Terrible Tuesday.
1985: Filed with IRS as nonprofit.
1986: Lela Porter Waterfowl pond was built.
1989: Added 10 new dog runs and expanded lobby.
1990: Added enclosed garage and 2nd quarantine area to ARC.
2020: Break ground on new adoption center and renovations to current facilities.
