ROTARY MINUTES

Isn’t it great to be a Rotarian! To be a member of an organization that literally removed polio, and the fear of polio attacking our children from this planet, makes every Thursday a shining day. Today was no exception either, President Cara rang the bell smartly just after noon and got us standing on our feet. Dr. David then led us in a thanksgiving prayer for our many blessings. After this tremendous prayer, President Cara reminded us of our faithful member Ben Shelton by singing his favorite song, “Edelweiss.” You could hear Noros and Tommy harmonizing in the back of the room. Soon to be President Greg is traveling in Mexico and Pres Cara asked for prayer for his safe return, especially for next Thursday night.
The “Brag Bucket” was passed and several stepped up to Past Pres Noros’ challenge. Those that caught the ear of an 80-year-old scribe were: Brad was bragging about his seven-month-old grandson, and Past Pres John bragging about our Air Force Squadron and their faithfulness for always being available on flag setting days.
Past Pres Steve then introduced the “Youth of the Month.” This month’s awardee is, Miss Heaven Wilson. Miss Wilson is a 13-year-old student at Rider. She is an extremely active young lady, running track at school, her involvement with South West B & G Club, arts and crafts, and her church, New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Past Pres Steve pointed out she maintains a positive attitude in everything she does, and is an example setter at South West. Her well-groomed and classy appearance today, as she accepted her award, went hand in hand with her personal goal in life to be a fashion designer. Her Mother was then introduced and you could tell where Miss Wilson received a good deal of her guidance.
Soon to be Past Pres Cara then introduced our program, OBI “Our Blood Institute.” OBI was represented by Ms. Jessica Hobert who did a wonderful job of presenting the importance of blood donating. “Hope Is the Vibe” is the new logo and it’s followed by “Give Hope---Give Blood.” Every two seconds blood is needed across our great country. Just think what would happen if there was no one in charge of collecting and qualifying it safe. Ms. Hobert covered all the new ways to get the word out and to have an active and financial rewarding program for collecting. She covered the “Donable Cares Gives Hope” program where non-profits can help their fund raising by getting involved with these new OBI programs for collecting blood and getting cash for donations. Sixteen years old is the minimum age for donating and types O- and B- are badly needed at this time. Ms. Hobert backed what she said by bringing a blood donating bus with her where many of us stopped by and donated. Great program, Jessica, and thank you for all that you do in this community!
Pres Cara closed us as President for the last time with an usual smile on her face with the remarkable and challenging “Four Way Test.”
