From May 15th Meeting
Our good buddy, Dave (Hartman), kick-started our meeting by slowing us down to turn to the Lord in prayer. Cara Sauceda followed with the pledge and song. We had a visitor from District 5790 - the Youth Services Chair. Monica Horton requested that another family step up to serve as a host for an exchange student coming this year. During announcements, it was noted that the NCO Club would have volunteers available to help with flags on Memorial Day and that RSVP’s for our annual Rotary evening party are due by June 12 for the June 26 celebration. During bragging time, it was mentioned that our Service Above Self Award was the lead story on KAUZ evening news on May 8. The feature story highlighted our club’s commitment to honoring our public servants.
A young lady named Heaven Wilson was presented as Youth of the Month. She’s a 6th grader at McNeil who loves math. Heaven is active in many nonprofits in the community, as well as the Boyd & Girls Club, including summer camp.
John Deason had the honor of giving Matt Deason his blue badge. He extended the honors by presenting Matt with a Paul Harris Fellow.
Cara introduced the program, the LMLC - Larry McMurtry Literacy Center in Archer City, TX. Present were Kathy Floyd, Managing Director of the LMLC, and George Getchow, Director, who delivered the presentation. George, who was a personal friend of Larry McMurtry, has a passion for carrying on Larry’s literary legacy. George explained that several buildings in Archer City house over 250,000 books from McMurtry’s collection. He explained that their goal is to turn the McMurtry Literary Center into the “crown jewel of all literary centers.” It is quite a challenge as some of the buildings are in need of repairs, such as a new roof. Undaunted by the challenges, Getchow pushes on to carry out the mission of the LMLC, which is to resurrect the former Booked Up, Larry McMurtry’s internationally renowned bookstore in Arther City, and transform it into a thriving literary mecca that will showcase Larry’s life and legacy as a cowboy, novelist, screenwriter, rare book collector, and artist.
