President Stacie Cook rang the bell to kick off the meeting at 12:05 p.m., followed by the invocation by Dave Hartman. David Spencer led the club in the pledge of allegiance and the song, "America." During the tune of "R-O-T-A-R-Y," we mingled and greeted one another.
We had a few guests at this meeting. John Deason introduced Terry Points, who is with the City of Wichita Falls. Terry has played a major role in the development of Rotary Park. Sheldon Wang introduced Raul Hazel, who is an engineer. Dave Hartman introduced Solomon Moore with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Treston Teague introduced his wife Mary, who works for United Regional.
During the Sunshine Report, we learned that Shirley Crafts' latest scans were clean, but she is still on maintenance chemotherapy. David Spencer announced the passing of Willard Townsed, a previous member. John Deason announced that his kidney is cancer free, but they found some in his bladder. He will be starting a course of treatments over the next six weeks.
For the Brag Bucket, Carol Murray took some money from John Deason for bragging on Terry Points. Carla Dowlen had a brag on her nephew who was selected to play in a higher age group. Judy Koetter had a brag on her grandson, who is about to start his football season.
This week's Member Spotlight was brought to you by Will Goodner. Will works for Habitat for Humanity. He has three children who are all doing well and is married to his high school sweetheart Michelle. The Habitat for Humanity will be starting a build soon, so if you are interested in volunteering, give him a call. He also wanted to let us know that he is the chair of the Member Spotlight and will be calling on us to share in the near future!
This week's program was introduced by Josh Phillips. We had the pleasure of welcoming the President of the Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation, Leslie Schaffner. She started the program with a video explaining what a community foundation does and how it benefits the community. Community foundations offer many opportunities to give money back to the community, with the opportunity to continue to give after you are gone. They monitor the funds to make sure that the money/endowments continue to make an impact. She stated that the goal is to make giving easier. There are many tax advantages, they provide a flexible planning tool, and not only does the money go to non-profits, but there are also many scholarships given out by the Community Foundation. They have a really solid team that works at the Community Foundation, they are monitored by a board of directors, as well as a scholarship committee. As a reminder, Texoma Gives will be happening on August 24.
The meeting was brought to an end with the presentation of the speaker's gift, a book that will be placed at Hirschi High School, followed by the Rotary Minute by David Spencer, and finally the Four-Way Test.
