This week's program:
The Salvation Army and The Red Cross
Our speakers this week will be Gordon Slack and Bill Howell. They will update the club on the role of two important organizations in our community, The Salvation Army and The Red Cross. The meeting will begin at noon on Zoom. Click on the link below to be admitted to the meeting:
Bill Howell is a 18-year resident of Estes Park having retired from a 32-year career in Law Enforcement. Having moved from the Los Angeles area after his retirement, Bill became involved in many Community Organizations, initially with Sunrise Rotary, Veterans Association as a Hospice Volunteer and a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League in Loveland. During the Flood of 2013, Bill offered his expertise as a disaster worker having worked many disasters in the Southern California area over his previous career. While denied at the time because he was not locally vetted, Bill joined the American Red Cross and trained as a Mass Care and Disaster Volunteer. Since joining the Red Cross, Bill has deployed to 20 Natural Disaster throughout the United States including a Volcano in Hawaii. During the Cameron Peak Wildfire, Bill worked 12 to 18 hour shifts as the Red Cross Liaison with the Larimer County Office of Emergency Management and the Town of Estes Park. Even after being evacuated himself, Bill continued his work assisting in finding emergency housing and disaster relief for those affected by the wildfire. Bill continues to work with the Red Cross preparing for the upcoming flood and wildfire season.
Following three years in the Army, Gordon Slack went back to school to earn a degree in Computer Science. After 10 years writing software, he screwed up and got into management. He escaped management and began a 25-year career in industrial sales that took him to several foreign countries including California. Gordon and Annie have lived in Estes Park for 20 years.
Update from President Bill Solms
Great program by Wendy Koenig this past week. Those who could not make the Zoom meeting missed a real treat! Thank you, Mayor Koenig.
Karol Reinhart is putting together a great program for President's Night, June 17th; we promise to finish by 7:30 pm!!
This week our Rotary Foundation scholarship awards will be announced at the high school; Doug and I are honored to make the announcements this coming Wednesday. A big thank you to our club's volunteers who put in the hours at the library reading the profiles of all applicants, about 29 of them! I read through one of them only to realize I needed much more time than I had available to review all of them, a task that took our volunteers 3 to 5 hours to finish the complete job.... again, thanks!!
Now that we are gearing up to meet live and share a meal together, I would like to remind all of us to invite someone to attend with us. We cannot expect to have a healthy club without extending an invitation to those in our spheres of influence. I apologize that no firm meeting/location is set yet, but as I work on this, please have in mind who you will invite.
In all we think, say, or do....
Prez Bill
Come and celebrate your club!

May 13, 2021 Meeting Notes
President Bill Solms called the meeting to order at noon on Zoom. There were 24 people in attendance. He departed from the usual agenda by telling a joke he borrowed from his 15-year old granddaughter, attempting to steal the spotlight from our Jokester, Scott Thompson. Bill then made several announcements:
It's unlikely that Nicky's will be available for our club meetings until early July. Another venue is being considered.
Presidents’ Night is set for June 17. Karol Rinehart is working hard on a plan for an in-person celebration. Details to follow.
Volunteers are needed for the Estes Park Half Marathon on Sunday, June 20. Contact Carl Robicheaux for details.
Duck Race Committee will meet at 5 p.m. today; Software Committee will meet at 3 p.m. today. Both will be held on Bill Solms’ Zoom.
Bill asked for an update on the Golf Tournament. Pete Sumey said the committee has not started its planning meetings.
Bill recognized May birthdays. As the honored members were not in attendance, he encouraged us to reach out with greetings. Bill said everyone is looking forward to in-person meetings.
Gregg Jurgens gave an invocation, a prayer for unity. Bill led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Scott Thompson welcomed two guests, Marianne Solms and Pat Newsom. He then offered up a timely joke on the Mommy Test. Bill challenged the club with a question from The Rotarian Magazine. No one had the answer. Ron Gordon tried, but, alas, guessed incorrectly.
Happy Money
Lots of club members were happy today, garnering $52 for the Foundation. They included: Madison Casey, who is celebrating his 21st wedding anniversary; Ron Gordon, who is happy that Michelle Mann and Sarah Pita will be going to Albania this month and will present our program on June 3; Jennifer Comstock, who is thrilled that her daughter and boyfriend will soon visit; Anne Slack, who is happy about the Scholarship Awards Night at the high school; Jim Whiteneck, who is glad to have seen all six of his grandchildren recently; Rita DuChateau, who is happy to have visited family in the Midwest; and Tom Gardner, who is grateful to Lee Lasson for solving most of his computer problems.
In another departure from our typical agenda, Scott Thompson tried to stump the group with a trivia question on Don Widrig’s code-writing. Rita DuChateau knew the answer, so Scott will donate $20.
Program
Scott Thompson introduced the program by Mayor Wendy Koenig. Our mayor provided an overview of the past year’s challenges, lessons and triumphs. She encouraged club members to reach out to town trustees on topics of interest. Following her program, several members posed questions on Mayor Koenig’s experience as an Olympian in 1972 and 1976. Other questions she addressed were funding for the fire district, the prospects for the upcoming tourist season, the status of The Loop and its possible impact of our Duck Race, and the new parking plan, which includes a barnacle applied to windshields of parking scofflaws' vehicles. Mayor Koenig accepted her first Piece of the Rock and said she would display it in her office.
Adjournment
President Bill adjourned the meeting at 12:54 p.m. with the recitation of the Four-Way Test.

Our club makes headlines for Global Grant
The latest issue of Nehemiah-Gateway USA's newsletter has a story on the $35,000 Global Grant to improve the clinic in Albania and offer staff training to benefit children with autism. Our own Jack Boatman is quoted, "Our Rotary club is very excited to support Nehemiah Gateway on this project to help children in Albania."
Stay tuned for a special program on our partnership with Nehemiah Gateway USA on June 3.
Is Zoom a challenge?
Anne Slack has the answers!
For anyone new to the workings of Zoom, it can be a confusing experience. Our Membership Chair Anne Slack took on the challenge of creating a step-by-step tutorial on navigating Zoom.
