Due to Larimer County's Safer At HomeLevel Redguidelines, our meeting venue, Nicky's Steakhouse, is closed for in-person dining. Our Dec. 10 club meeting meeting will be conducted solely on Zoom. President Bill Solms will lead the meeting from Doug Mann's conference room so that a strong Internet connection will allow us all to participate.

Join your club this Thursday on Zoom to hear our program on Global Advance. Our speaker will be Jonathan Shibley, Global Advance President, who will join us on Zoom and be introduced by Doug Mann.
Jonathan Shibley

We have received plenty of gift cards for Bright Christmas, but we will accept more if you are so moved.
All six fire departments in our region will accept our donation of $750 each from our Projects Fund that was funded by proceeds from the Friendship Card. This is thanks for their incredible work to save our communities from the wildfires.
We will not be coordinating bell ringing for Salvation Army this year, however we are encouraged to use the link to volunteer to ring bells and we are encouraged to donate what we would normally put in the buckets. Mail donations for Estes Park branch to Salvation Army at PO Box 172, Estes Park.
President Bill is also chairing the Duck Race. He said the Duck Race plans are progressing and thanked everyone for their support. The race will be May 1 regardless—either virtual or real. He will email us on the next meeting date. Don and Lee are working on the software.

Member Spotlight: Bruce Brown
Each week our Spoke is profiling a member of our Club in order to get to know them better and stay connected through these socially distant times.
Marlene and Bruce Brown, with Lucy
I was born and raised in Chicago and was a hopeless fan of the White Sox, who almost always lost to the Yankees. I attended Miami University, majoring in Math. I then went to the University of Illinois and finished my PhD in Physics in 1972. Along the way I married Marlene, my high school sweetheart, and 53 years later it’s still working wonderfully. Upon graduation I had to choose between my one job offer and went to Argonne National Lab, a basic research government lab near Chicago. Over my 30-year career at Argonne I worked my way up slowly and for 14 years was director of a large neutron scattering facility.
Upon retirement, we moved almost immediately to the Estes area for the simple reasons that we wanted to hike in the summer and ski in the winter, which we are still doing although slower. I had been coming to Rocky for many years, beginning with my family in the 50’s. We built our house in The Retreat and, especially now during the pandemic, enjoy the quiet, openness and numerous hiking opportunities nearby. Our daughter, Rebecca, and family (Sabina is 12 and a riot with Papa) live in Chicago and we visit frequently. Every summer (except for 2020) we go to Michigan for ~2 months to enjoy our family home on the shore of Lake Michigan. I have many fond memories of growing up there with my 2 siblings, and a few not so good memories of sun burn. Tennis and picking blueberries with Sabina are now highlights.
I joined Rotary in 2004 under the sponsorship of Steve Little and immediately joined the Scholarship Committee. I was chair for 6 years before handing it over to Tara. I especially enjoy the socialization of our Rotary meetings and have missed this recently. I have always tried to give back to the community and led a High School Board of Education for 6 years, and since retiring have been active with the Library Trustees, the Salud Foundation, and Homeowners Board in addition to Rotary.
Is Zoom a challenge?
Anne Slack has the answers!
For anyone new to the workings of Zoom, it can be a confusing experience. Our Membership Chair Anne Slack took on the challenge of creating a step-by-step tutorial on navigating Zoom.
The document is posted on our club website's home page, under Home Page Download Files (left hand side of the page) for your future reference. Click on this link to be taken to our club's home page to read all about the world of Zoom, and think about printing it out for a friend. https://portal.clubrunner.ca/5241
Thanks, Anne for your efforts to keep all of our members engaged until we can meet again!
Grant will deliver holiday cheer
The 2020 Friendship Card has made a new friend! The Estes Park Police Department Auxiliary’s Blue Santa program has received a $300 grant from our club. The grant was made possible by proceeds from sales of the 2020 Friendship Card, which provides discounts at area businesses.
The Community Service Committee, led by Beth Weisberg, generated the grant request, which was approved by the Board of Directors.
The popular Blue Santa program delivers food, gifts and hygiene products to the disabled, shut-in and elderly in the Estes community.
“The Blue Santa program reaches many Estes Park residents whose need might otherwise have gone unnoticed,” said Weisberg. “The Noon Rotary Club is happy to support Blue Santa in bringing comfort and cheer to these members of our community.”
Police Auxiliary Commander Bill Bradford with Karen Thompson.
The 2021 Friendship Card goes on sale at several locations in December. For a $10 investment, Friendship Card owners unlock discounts at 73 local merchants. See https://www.facebook.com/EPFriendshipCard for details.
