PROGRAM: For his Member Moment, Ron Taggart did a great job of talking about a three-story tree house that he and his friends built when they were in junior high school. Sadly the project was ultimately burned down but he has great stories about it.
Ron presented the program as he discussed his trip to a conference about the Water Project in El Salvador. We contributed to the Kent Club, leader of the project, for this effort. About 60 people came together as people from the villages, Rotary clubs and college students to learn about the water project. The main purpose of the project is to have water available for homes so that women did not have to spend up to four hours per day gathering water for their families.
The water starts with a clean spring and travels by pipe to a catchment basin. From there pumps send it to the top of a hill where solar panels run it to a distribution tank. Finally, water is sent by gravity to every home.
Ron felt that the money was well spent. A local organization, Coordination for Community and Development Association (COCODA), oversees the effort. One criticism Ron picked up was that the Rotary Foundation grants are too complicated and cumbersome for management of the process. Basically fraud prevention works against completion of the project. Ron was glad for the opportunity to see first hand how the process worked.
