President Callahan’s Announcements
After Tony Falcione has done such a great job coordinating the Four-Way Speech Contest at the high school for several years, he has resigned. Would another Rotarian please let Jim know that you will take over this privilege?
Jim thanked the five Rotarians from our club who attend last Saturday’s membership event.
In the “Who is this Rotarian?” activity, we had to figure out who has visited all 50 states, is the middle child of 7 children and is a cancer survivor. The Rotarian is Roger Cline.
Mike Sekulich reminded everyone to get their Reverse Raffle Tickets. The event will be October 22nd at Guys Party Center with the bar and the side boards opening at 6:00. There are only 13 tickets left.
Annette Oborn also spoke about the Silent Auction part of the evening. Be sure to give her the baskets you are donating, wine for the wine pull or lottery tickets for the lottery tree. Let Annette, Christina or Katie know what is coming.
Dave Renninger asked people to sign up for the October 1st date at the Akron Canton Foodbank. We volunteer from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. Dave has set a goal of having one new person each month. It is a great experience!
Dave also gave us another unique opportunity to support the foodbank. Go to Walmart.com/hunger. At that site you will have a chance to vote for the Akron-Canton Foodbank. The foodbanks which get the top 5 votes will be awarded $60,000. Vote every day!
Annette Oborn circulated a sign-up sheet for those who will visit a meeting of the Interact Club at the High School.
Bonnie Housley thanked Mike Davanzo, District Governor, for the gifts he brought to the members today.
Program: Jim Callahan introduced Mike Davanzo. He is a graduate of Boardman High School and graduated from Kent State University in Classic Languages. He went on to receive his doctorate in Educational Schools Administration. Eventually he was Director of Athletics for the Medina Board of Education.
Governor Mike gave an inspiring presentation. He talked about district activities that make Rotary’s presence known. There were 400 people at a Cleveland Indians game. On October 23rd our district with the support of Bob Evans’ Restaurants will donate 15% of all sales which will benefit World Polio Day. That donation will be on both in the restaurant or take-out donations. He also asked that we mark our calendars for April 24th and 25th of next year when the District Conference will be at the Doubletree in Independence. The last Sunday in June there will be a picnic at Rusty Hills in Medina. He also suggested we look at the District Newsletter and District Website.
He went on the explain some of the goals of Gary C.K. Huang, President of Rotary International. President Huang would like us to grow from 1.2 million members to 1.3 million members internationally by June of next year. We need to share our pride in Rotary and our accomplishments. We need to share with other people in our community the good things we accomplish through service in our club. He would also like every Rotarian to give something to the Foundation.
Governor Davanzo used a candle to illustrate the theme “Light Up Rotary”. He talked about how the candle is passion for doing good and sharing. The flame gets brighter when it is shared and light means hope.
He closed his talk with the proverb “Wise men plant trees knowing they will never sit in the shade of those trees. “ He thanked us all for being beacons of hope in our community.
