On this crisp morning, President Gail Moseley opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. Dave Christman followed with the invocation about making a difference as a Rotarian.

PROGRAM: Gail introduced Dave Christman to the group to present the program. He is the person who has provided all of the boxes of lids so that we could remove the inside part. These will be recycled into benches for both Stow and Munroe Falls when the collection has been completed.
Dave, is currently Innovation Leader-Industrial Automation for Pneumatic Scale Angelus, whose parent company is Barry-Wehmiller Co. He discussed with us the company's history as well as the products of his part of the production. He and his wife Sandy, who was his high school sweetheart, have three adult children He holds degrees from The University of Akron and from The Johns Hopkins University, where he received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
The parent company goes back to its start in 1897 in St. Louis. Except for a break during World War II, when they made Army supplies, the company has been in the various facets of the packaging machinery business. When the company developed its Guiding Principles of Leadership, it was with the idea that personal growth helps the company grow. A copy of the handout describing this is attached to these minutes. This tool has been used to help struggling companies turn themselves around. By 2018 the company had 120 acquisitions and had taught them the BarryWehmiller philosophy. That year the parent company experienced three billion dollars in revenue.
Dave gave some examples of things that have to be considered in their packaging machinery. For example, the tightness of a bottle cap needs to be just right so that it is not so tight that a person can't open in and not so loose that it will leak. Bags inside of cereal boxes need to be calibrated so they will not explode. Time is important so the speed at which items pass though the capping process is a consideration. He gave examples of capping 300 to 2000 items per minute. The company sells machines to many other companies but then also sells repair parts for when the process creates that need. This program was an example of things that the average person has probably not thought about, but that make our economy successful. Dave's experience and enthusiasm for his company was evident.
The meeting was adjourned with the reciting of the Four Way Test.
