President Bob Sweitzer opened the meeting by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Program Host, Jeff Frye followed with the invocation.

PROGRAM: Jeff then began his introduction of the speaker, Chuck Scoville by telling a few jokes related to the military.  For instance, ‘’What is a soldier's least favorite date?"  “March 4th”.  (Say it out loud.)

He then told us at our speaker is a retired U.S. Army Coronel.  He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio University and then went on to earn a doctorate in physical therapy from Baylor University.  He utilized his physical therapy knowledge in Ft. Knox, Berlin, West Point and Ft. Bragg.  Ultimately he went to Walter Reed Hospital in the Department of Rehabilitation helping those who had lost limbs in military service.

Chuck explained that the Surgeon General asked him to develop a plan for those who came back with limbs lost. The first center built for this purpose was built at Walter Reed.  From there centers were created in San Antonio, Texas and San Diego, California.

There have been some major treatment developments through these centers.  Surgery time has been cut in half due to the ability to create 3-D images of the wounds and then build implants prior to the surgery.  Physical therapy equipment has also improved.  Through the Caren System, computerized programming works with the patient on stumble recovery, gait training shooting in a virtual environment, driver simulation and art therapy.  Since many of the clients have a goal of returning to duty, “Operation Gear” emphasizes user comfort, stability and fit and computerized control that includes techniques like learning to walk backwards and functioning in water.  There are also sports specific prosthetics for activities like golf, swimming and about any other sport imaginable.   There are even new advances that are motorized, lightweight and have USB connections for I-Pads or phones.  And, the further this technology is developed, the more it is available to mainstream America.  Insurance may cover a portion of the adaptive care.

The Rotary Foundation: Dave Renninger explained our campaign to support The Rotary Foundation.  This is not our club's foundation, but is the Foundation of Rotary International that supports things like Polio Plus and having clean and available water for everyone.  Envelopes containing what you need to contribute to get to the next level of giving and to receive a Paul Harris award are available for every member and they also contain a pledge form.  A QR code is there so that you can contribute in that way if you want to do so.  Look for further information in the weeks to come from Dave and Maria Ferrara.
