Co-President Brad Ruth opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Program Host, Elizabeth Eaken followed with an invocation about service, based on the Four-Way Test.
CELEBRATIONS:
Birthdays: Steve Dunton will be celebrating his birthday tomorrow.
Wedding Anniversary: John and Janet Long will celebrate 47 years of marriage on the 16th.
Rotary Anniversary: Christine Faranda observes 2 years as a Rotarian this week.
HAPPY BUCKS:
Mary Dula said how happy she was to be presented an Interact t-shirt for her involvement with the club.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
John Pribonic said that all the dictionaries have had the labels put in them and they are ready to be delivered to the schools. He will check with Pat Messmore, but hopefully they can go to the schools next week after our in-person meeting.
Rich Bedell said it looks like our Reverse Raffle profits will be in the vicinity of $12,000.
Brad reminded everyone that our Board Meeting will be in person at 7:15 a.m. this Friday, November 12 in the Council Chambers of City Hall. The minutes of the last meeting are attached to these notes.
Brad also reminded us to sign up to help with our cluster project. We will be planting saplings at Wood Hollow Park in Hudson on Saturday, November 20. Ten Interact students have already signed up so it would be great to have many from our club there too. There are two shifts: 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 and 12:30-3:00. Brad will have the sign-up sheet next week or contact him at bruth@glbainc.com if you can help.
Hopefully, next week we will be pinning Dinah Henderson if everyone's schedule allows that. She would like to have officers of the club with her for that.
Dinah Henderson reported on the Interact District Conference that her students attended last week. The other clubs were blown away by the involvement of our Stow-Munroe Falls students. They are really making us a better place to be. When the students volunteered at the Foodbank last week, it really made an impression on them, It is neat to see young people appreciate the value of service. The students now gain reward keys for their involvement and proudly display them.
We have a great chance for a photo op. This Saturday, November 13, Rotary members are asked to show up at City Hall for a photo op with Interact students. It will just take a few minutes and would be very much appreciated.
Holiday Helping Hands will kick into gear next week. John Pribonic reported that we will have 12 families with 24 youth and that next week we will be able to sign up to shop. Gail Moseley reported that the Wrapping Party will be on Wednesday, December 15 in Council Chambers of City Hall.
Bulldog Bag Items being collected for November are cups and boxes of soup, protein bars, tissues and lip balm. Take your items to the box in the reception area of City Hall. They will be very much appreciated.
PROGRAM:
Elizabeth Eaken, Program Chair, answered the question about how COVID made a difference in her life. She talked about the many significant milestones that her family went through during that time. One daughter, Emily, changed her name to Robin, graduated from high school and began her Ohio State College experience from home. Their other daughter, Heather, graduated from Kent State University, Summa Cum Laude, and began her career at the Medina Rafter Center. Elizabeth and Chip celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and both Elizabeth and Heather observed significant birthdays. Needless to say, many of the celebrations looked a whole lot different than they might have been.
Elizabeth then introduced Dr. Barbara Kelly, PhD who is a certified family therapist and also happens to be Elizabeth's big sister. She came to us from Orlando, Florida this morning. Her topic was "The Giving and Receiving of Feedback." Since we do both of these all the time, it is important to learn some techniques for doing this in as positive a way as possible, so that the desired result is more likely to happen. Later in the morning, Elizabeth forwarded the power point of Dr. Kelly's talk so that everyone could have it. Because of that, I will just point out a few things that she said and hopefully you will look at the whole presentation for more information.
Before one person gives feedback to another, it is important to think about what to say.
1. Do a self-check to see if what we are about to say is helpful and necessary.
2. Concentrate on the behavior making the feedback necessary and not the person.
3. Describe the effects of the behavior and how it made you (or your client or your kids etc. feel).
4. Use a lot of "I" statements in giving feedback
5. Give the feedback in private.
6. Be mindful of cultural and other personal factors such as age, and background.
7. Allow the person a chance to respond
8.. Follow up with support and offering assistance.
If you are the person receiving the feedback, there are some things that can make the situation more successful.
1. Listen and hear what the person has to say without interrupting
2. Utilize active listening skills and try to make sure you have the key message.
3 Be conscious of what emotion you are feeling
4. Figure out a follow-up plan with steps that both of you might take in the process.
5. Think about what you learned from the feedback.
6. If the situation doesn't go well, how might you and the other person look to repair the situation and grow from the experience?
Dr. Kelly suggested a book, "Difficult Conversations" by Stone, Patton and Hein as a way to learn more about this difficult topic.
