PROGRAM:
Happiness Moment: Program Host, Marty Tass, said that he has been strengthened by three mentors in his life. The last of those mentors passed away last week in a tragic car accident. This week he has been keeping in touch with that person's family, letting them know how important his life was to Marty.
He began his introduction of the speaker by saying that he feels pride in seeing his children become successful and that today's speaker is his daughter, Laura Shank who formed Gifted Non-Profit Solutions, LLC. With 7 years of experience in the non-profit world and 6 years working with for-profit entities, she is committed to helping organizations reach and exceed their goals. For her program this morning, she shared her experience in what makes board members successful.
Board members in the non-profit world have some unique expectations. They are strategic advisors, sometimes supplement gaps in staffing, use their expertise to enhance the board, and spread knowledge about the organization. It is important that the board member care about the organization and its mission, share any potential conflict of interest and recognize their duty to follow any laws and by-laws which govern the organization. It is also necessary to understand any financial or time expectations ahead of joining the board.
Some musts for board members are: 1. Read reports and any supplemental materials ahead of time. 2. Ask for clarification when understanding is needed, such as in knowing the meaning of acronyms that are used. 3. Lend a hand when you can. 4. Develop relationships with the other members to understand gifts and needs of the people and the organization.
In choosing what board to be a part of, it is necessary to have a good fit. Think about different types of activities or causes that really interest you. It may be that you serve on a board that follows things you like to do and are outside of your profession. Use board membership as a commitment to something that you are passionate about, rather than using it as a resume builder.
It is important that board members have an orientation, have a match for their talents and that they can be an ambassdor for the entity. Memorize the 30-second "elevator speech" that showcases the agency. Laura shared that Leadership Akron is one place where people can find out what board openings are available in the area.
JOKE: Mary Dula shared the joke today about a man at a doctor's office trying to get rid of shingles. Ask her to share the joke with you.
Next week Tina Gary will share a joke.
Have a great week!
