As the new Rotary year begins under the theme "The Magic of Rotary", Co-President Steve Dunton opened the meeting by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Annie Hanson-Hilaire's Mom, Pat Hanson, led us in a meaningful invocation.

Steve thanked Sgt. At Arms Todd Hearty and his helper, Denise Green for getting us checked in this morning and for welcoming our visitors; Pat Hanson, Kristen Harris and Shaletta Smith.

HAPPY BUCKS:

Don Coughlin shared that his granddaughter, Fiona Coughlin, who is a sophomore at Baldwin Wallace University's Conservatory of Music is in Hawaii for a three-week opera workshop and internship where she will have a role in an Italian opera on July 13.

Matthew Aguiar had a two-part Happy Buck where he said how much he appreciates being a Rotarian and also this fall he will become a full time student at the University of Akron's School of Law and was awarded a scholarship there.

CELEBRATIONS:

Awards:  Annette and Bob Oborn attended the District Banner Exchange and Award Ceremony last week in Painesville.  Our club had to be on everyone's mind as Bob Oborn was installed as District Governor Elect.  We received the A.Z. Baker Award, which is based on service, giving and participation for the year that Annette Oborn was president of our club.  And, Annie Hanson Hilaire was presented with the "Best Use of Social Media Award".  She not only has great posts but worked hard against Facebook to get us back on the site after we were shut down for imitating Rotary. International. Annette presented her with a bouquet as a thank you.

Wedding Anniversaries:  Dinah and Dave Henderson are celebrating 35 years of marriage this week while Tom and Penny Loepp are celebrating 7 years.

Birthday:  Don Coughlin is celebrating his birthday this week and Maria Ferrara led us in singing to him!

Drawing: Last week the 4 of hearts was drawn and this week John Long's table had the winning ticket but drew the 9 of clubs.  The pot will grow again.

Installation of club leaders was held last week.  For those who were unable to attend, a program is attached.  Be sure to check out all of the activities and accomplishments of the 2023-24 Rotary year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Steve reminded everyone to wear their badges during the meetings as a courtesy to our new members and visitors.  Also, everyone should check their Clubrunner account to see if your picture is there and that your information is correct.  The information about how to access Clubrunner is attached to these minutes.

Foodbank volunteer time will be next Wednesday, July 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Foodbank in Akron.  We need all hands on deck so sign up as you sign in next week.

New Rotary shirts:  Steve told us that the shirts we ordered are in and will be ready to be picked up next week.  The first shirt is free, so new members should be sure to get their's.  If you have ordered one, the t-shirts are $10.00, the crewneck sweatshirts are $19 and the hooded sweatshirts are $24.  The larger sizes are a bit more.

Summer Sunset Blast: This event will be at Silver Springs Park on Labor Day Weekend.  We will sell 50/50 tickets so will need lots of people to sign up (and show off their new shirts).   Steve will have a sign-up sheet beginning next week.

Adopt-A-Spot;  Hopefully we will get some rain today that will make it easier to weed. Check your calendar to see if you have signed up to weed, or check with Marty Tass, chair of the project.  I know he mentioned De-De and Annie, but there were more on the list as well.

Joe Post: Every year we receive a donation from the estate of former Rotarian, Joe Post.  A gift of $200 was received with appreciation.

Fifth Wednesday:  July is another month with a Fifth Wednesday, so the plan is for us to visit Sarah's vineyard for dinner. on July 31.  Gail Moseley will have a sign-up sheet available next week.  It is a great opportunity to bring a guest and just enjoy each other's company.    There will be no morning meeting that day.

Board Meeting:  Our Board will meet on Friday, July 12 at 7:15 a.m. at City Hall.  Board members are expected to attend but others are welcome.  The minutes of the May meeting are attached to these minutes since there was not a regular June meeting.

PROGRAM: Annie Hanson Hilaire, Program Host, introduced herself saying that she lives in Stow with her husband Mike and two little girls, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  She is employed at the University of Akron in the College of Human Services and told three medical jokes to the group.  The groaning could probably be heard all over Stow.

She introduced Shaleeta Smith and Kristen Harris of the Summit County Health Department's Infant Mortality Department.  Sharletta is the Director of Family Health and has a B.S. in Biology and a M.A. in Public Health.  She is past president of the Akron Urban League's Young Professionals group.  Kristen has a B.A. in Biology and a M.A in Clinical Epidemiology
